Information as of 2010:  Head Men’s Basketball Coach – Teacher – Administrator – 1978-2001. During his 18 seasons at Mesa State he posted a 304-195 record, for a .609 winning percentage. In 1978 he hit the 200-win mark and Number 300 was an 86-56 win over New Mexico Highlands on Feb. 11, 1985…During the 1990-1991 season, Schakel reached the 400-win milestone for his career on Jan. 26, 1996, he reached the 500 win plateau at New Mexico Highlands with a 70-61 victory. During his tenure he guided the Mavericks to six RMAC Men's Basketball Championships. Schakel developed the Mesa State College Basketball Camps in 1978, which are still some of the largest camps in the country today. He coached nine All-Americans, several Academic All-Americans, posted the best mark in MSC history and the fourth-best record in Colorado collegiate basketball history.  Schakel served as the Mavericks Director of Athletics for two years (1979-1981) and then again was asked to be the head of the MSC Athletic Department from 1998-2001. In 2001-2002 he served as the Mavs' Women's Basketball Assistant Coach in charge of offense, the team posted a 17-2 RMAC record and became the first-ever RMAC women's basketball team to host the NCAA Division II North Central Regional…Schakel spent 30 years as a head basketball coach with a record of 503-285 (.638 winning percentage). A native of Iowa he graduated from Central Iowa College. After college, Schakel coached at Crowly County High School in Colorado and Storm Lake High School in Iowa. He won the AA State Championship while at Crowly and, at one time, had a personal winning streak of 49 straight games. He entered the college ranks at Mid-Plains Community College where he recorded 22-9 and 27-9 records in successive years. Before Mesa State, he spent one year as an assistant at University of Utah, who were 23-6 during his time there.
