The 1986 volleyball team posted a 42-9 overall record and a seventh place finish at the NAIA National Tournament. The Mavericks won all seven conference matches to claim its third straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship. The team also won its third straight district championship. Kathy Holthus earned first team All-American honors, the first female in school history to receive the honor. Phyllis Jennings earned second team All-American accolades, and Melanie Roberts was an Academic All-American honoree. Berk was also named the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at Mesa State. Holthus, Jennings and Verna Julaton each earned all-conference and all-district honors. Other members of the team included; Teresa Hilferty, Tammy Wright, Brenda Towles, Kelly Cannell, Michelle Brown, Shane Edmondson and Kelly Beer. The team was coached by 2010 Hall of Honor inductee Rusty Crick. His assistants were Steve Congdon and Carolyn Crouch.
