Information as of 2003:  Dick is a graduate of Craig High School where he participated in both football and basketball. He was honored by receiving All-Conference and All-State recognition in both of these sports and was also inducted in the Moffat County High School Hall of Fame.

Dick enrolled in Mesa Jr. College in 1959 and excelled in both football and basketball. He earned All-Conference recognition, playing on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. He was also selected to the Junior College All-American Football team and played in the All-American game in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dick was also an excellent basketball player and was a two-year starter, leading the team in rebounds and consistently leading the team in scoring.

Wayne Nelson states, "Dick was a team leader who was highly respected by both the players and coaches. His contributions as a player and student at Mesa were greatly appreciated by all who knew him."

Dick transferred to Utah State University where he lettered both years in football and earned his B.S. degree in 1964. He then entered Colorado State College where he earned his M.S. degree in 1965.

After college Dick began his stellar 16-year high school coaching career. He was named New Mexico High School Coach of the Year in 1968. In 1971 and 1976 he was named District Coach of the Year at Odessa High School.

His first taste of collegiate coaching came in 1979 when he was named the offensive backfield and quarterback coach at the University of New Mexico. He returned to the high school ranks the following year and remained a prep coach through the 1983 season.

Winder joined the Texas Tech staff for the first time in 1984 and served as a defensive end coach, then offensive coordinator. In his nine seasons leading the Texas Tech offensive unit, the team established 59 school records and scored 300 or more points in a season seven times. He served as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma from 1996-97, as a receiver coach at Texas Tech in 1998 and 1999 and as a quarterback coach at Tarleton State in 2000-2001. Dick is presently the quarterback coach at Texas Christian University where they finished the 2002 season as Conference USA Champions with a 10-2 record and defeated Colorado State in the Liberty Bowl.

Dick and his wife, Vicki, reside in Burleson, Texas. Dick has two grown children, Greg and Peri-Ann, and two granddaughters, Presley, 5 and Piper, 1 month.
