General
- Eleven different Maverick squads will be in action this week.
- Six of those will play this week
- Eight different Maverick squads are ranked amongst the top 25 in their respective coaching organization's national poll.
- Five are in the top ten while three are in the top five.
- The Mavericks have already won a conference-leading four RMAC titles this academic year.
- CMU is also the only RMAC institution with both basketball teams included in the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings.
- The women's wrestling team will help make history competing in the inaugural NCAA Championships as the first of what could be as many as seven winter sports teams in the national tournament/meet.
Women's Basketball
- The Mavericks, ranked fourth in the latest WBCA Division II Coaches Poll, made history and extended their winning streak to 27 with a pair of regular-season closing road wins in South Dakota.
- The Mavs defeated South Dakota Mines, 79-55 on Thursday before defeating Black Hills State, 79-66 on Saturday afternoon.
- The win over South Dakota Mines set a school-record for consecutive wins.
- The Mavs completed a perfect 20-0 conference season as the first RMAC team to go undefeated in 30 years (Nebraska-Kearney; 1995-96; 16-0).
- The Mavs have won a RMAC record 37 consecutive conference games over the past two seasons.
- The Mavericks are now 30-1 overall and have reached the 30-win mark for the third time in program history.
- Olivia Reed Thyne recorded the first triple-double in program history and the first in the RMAC this season in Saturday's win over Black Hills State. She had 24 points on 8-for-10 shooting, a career-high 11 rebounds and ten rebounds.
- Her 11 assists were the most of any Maverick this season and tied for fifth highest in program history.
- Mason Rowland also scored 22 points while Mykaela Moore had 17 points.
- Reed Thyne and Rowland both registered double-doubles in Thursday's win. Rowland set season-highs for points (27) and rebounds (12) while Reed Thyne had 21 points and 11 rebounds.
- The Mavs now have the longest winning streak in Division II and the fourth longest in all of NCAA women's basketball trailing only Division III NYU (87) and Division I UConn (47) and Division III Washington & Lee (28).
- Reed Thyne is now averaging 20.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game and ranks third in the country for total rebounds (347) and fifth for points (644).
- She is likely to become just the second player in RMAC history to win three straight RMAC Player of the Year honors, which are being voted on by RMAC Head Coaches.
- She holds the RMAC record for career points (2,240) and rebounds (1,321) and ranks second in Colorado collegiate history (all divisions) for career rebounds and third for points.
- The Mavs will begin the RMAC Tournament on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will host No. 8 seed Colorado School of Mines (15-16, 10-10 RMAC) for the second time this season.
- Should the Mavs win, they would then host the remainder of the tournament for the third straight time on the weekend.
- The semifinals would be played on Friday evening at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Those times are subject to change if the Maverick men also earn the right to host the weekend portion of the RMAC Tournament.
- The Mavericks were ranked third in last week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings and will find out their seeding for the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament via Sunday night's selection show that will air on NCAA.com at 8:30 p.m. MDT.
- A new set of regional rankings will be released on Wednesday.
Men's Basketball
- The Mavericks (19-9, 15-5 RMAC) finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the RMAC standings after splitting their road trip to South Dakota.
- The Mavs scored 110 points, their ninth highest single-game total, in Thursday's 110-93 win over South Dakota Mines.
- Ben Henderson scored a career-high 31 points while Ty Allred added 23.
- The Mavs scored an incredible 78 points in the paint in that victory and shot 68.6 percent (48-70).
- The Mavs then played at 14th-ranked Black Hills State on Saturday, falling 74-65.
- The Mavs had an 11-point halftime lead but shot just 37.1 percent (13-35) in the second half as the Yellow Jackets won the RMAC title outright with the win.
- Cohenj Gonzales scored 17 points to lead five Mavericks in double figures.Â
- Clayton Jewell had a season-high 14 rebounds and scored 10 points to register his seventh double-double.
- The Mavs have earned the No. 2 seed for this week's RMAC Tournament and will take on No. 7 seed New Mexico Highlands for the third time at home on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
- The Cowboys finished the regular season with a 13-18 overall record but went 11-9 in conference play.
- The Mavs are 11-1 at home this season and can reach the 20-win mark for the sixth time in seven seasons with a Tuesday night win, which would send the Mavs to the semifinals, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals.
- The Mavs were also in the No. 8 spot of last week's NCAA South Central Regional Rankings, which will be updated one more time on Wednesday before Sunday night's tournament selection show, which will air at 9 p.m. MDT on NCAA.com.
- Eight teams, including the RMAC and Lone Star Conference Tournament Champions, who will both receive automatic spots, will be selected.
Women's Wrestling
- The Mavericks will send four wrestlers to the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships this weekend in Coralville, Iowa.
- The Mavs representatives are Mia Zuniga (103 lbs.), Adriana Gomez (110), Lorianna Piestewa (124) and Jayleen Sekona (207) all took second place in at the Region VI Championships in St. Charles, Missouri on Feb. 21-22.
- The Mavs will enter the national championships ranked seventh in the latest NWCA National Rankings, released on Friday.
- Zuniga is seeded third while Piestewa and Sekona are both seeded sixth.
- Sekona will enter her final weekend with 99 career wins and is just one away from becoming the first Maverick woman to ever reach 100. She is looking to become a 4-time all-American, a feat accomplished by just two previous Mavericks (Marissa Gallegos, Jennesis Martinez).
- Gomez co-leads the team 29 wins and is 29-12.
- She and Sekona, who is 27-8, could set the Mavs' single-season record, which currently stands at 31 (Claire DiCugno, 2021-22)
- Piestewa is a returning all-American and has a 24-6 record.
- Zuniga, who also earned all-America honors while wrestling for King (Tenn.) last year, is 21-6 this season.
- Live coverage of this weekend's national tournament will be on ESPN+.
- Sessions begin at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. MST on Friday and at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. MST on Saturday.
Baseball
Softball
- The Mavs, 7-9 overall, won their second straight series, taking three of four games from MSU Denver in what were their first home games of the season.
- The Mavs are now 6-2 in the RMAC and tied for second place with the Colorado School of Mines, who they will play in Golden this weekend.
- On Saturday, the Mavs swept their home-opening doubleheader, 6-2 and 8-6.
- The Mavs then dropped Sunday's first game 1-0 on a solo home run, but rallied to record a 10-2 mercy-rule win to claim the series victory.
- Sophia Tassinari tossed a 4-hit complete game win in the series opener before Molli Magaña hit a go-ahead 3-run home run in the second as Tassinari picked up the save.
- Marissa Nehm went 2-0 in the circle, giving up just two hits and two runs in the series finale while picking up a complete game.
- The Mavs finished with 12 hits, including four doubles, in that final game as TK Landes went 3-for-3 with three runs scored from the nine hole while Magaña had three RBIs.
- The Mavs hit .340 as a team while having an on base percentage of .415 throughout the weekend.
- Landes led the team hitting .545 (6-11) while totaling seven runs.
- Brynn Escobar hit .417 (5-12) while Magaña led the team with 7 RBIs.
- The Mavs now start an 8-game road stretch with them heading to Golden this weekend to take on Colorado School of Mines in doubleheaders on Saturday (Noon) and Sunday (11 a.m.).
Men's Wrestling
Men's Track & Field
- The Mavericks competed in the RMAC Indoor Championships in Gunnison.
- The Maverick men finished third out of 13 teams with 65 team points, equal to their second best finish in program history.
- The Maverick men had a pair of sprinting champions in the 60 and 200 meters.
- Teo Casados won the 60 while breaking his own school-record with a time of 6.69 seconds as the Mavericks had four of the top six finishers in that event.
- Marik Cummings claimed the silver medal.
- Joseph Randolph won the 200 with a Mountaineer Field House record time of 21.45 seconds.
- Asa Keim claimed the bronze medal in the pole vault on Friday and went on to take sixth in the heptathlon.
- Solomon Griffen set a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 7.91 seconds the second fastest time in CMU history in the 60-meter preliminaries but did not finish the final.
- Freshman Vasileios Salpas (800m) and Hayden Moreno (Long Jump) both claimed fourth place finishes while the men's distance medley relay team took fifth in a NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 10:23.41, the third fastest in program history at nearly 7,800 feet of altitude.
- Randolph and Casados will earn official selection to the Mar. 13-14 NCAA Division II Championships in the 200 meters on Tuesday as they rank sixth and 12th, respectively, on the season-long national performance list. Casados also has an outside chance of selection in the 60.
- The same can be said for Griffen, who ranks 24th in the hurdles, and Salpas, who ranks 27th in the 800. The top 18 declared student-athletes in each individual event will be selected for the national meet in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
- Maverick school-record holder and 2025 RMAC Champion Javelin Thrower Izaak Siefken will get an early start on the outdoor season, contesting that discipline at Friday's Beach Opener in Long Beach, California.
- The Mavericks will then begin the outdoor season in full, hosting the Maverick Early Bird Open on Mar. 19-20.
Women's Track & Field
- The Maverick women tied for sixth at the RMAC Championships, scoring 58 team points.
- They had three podium finishes on Saturday as Kammi Merritt finished second in the 400 meters while Hannah Schissler and Megan Hodges both claimed the bronze in the 200 and 3,000 meters, respectively.
- Brooke Miller (800), Augustine Hancock (weight throw) and the 4x400-meter relay team all recorded fourth place finishes.
- Schissler also took fifth in the 60 meters while Merritt helped the Mavs to a fifth place finish in the distance medley relay.
- Kendra Ritzmann also finished fifth in the triple jump.
- On Friday, Kaitlyn Pearson finished fourth in the pentathlon while Taiya Carl took fifth in the pole vault.
- Merritt's 400-meter time of 55.69 seconds moved her in to second on the Mavs' all-time performers list and puts her in a tie for 28th on the national performance list with her converted time of 55.17 seconds.
- She will have a remote chance at selection for the national championships as only the top 18 declared student-athletes in each individual event will be selected.
- The Mavericks will begin the outdoor season at home on Mar. 19-20, hosting the Maverick Early Bird Open.
Women's Lacrosse
- The Mavs claimed their first win of the season in thrilling fashion on Saturday, defeating nationally-ranked Florida Tech, 15-14.
- The game featured six lead changes as the Mavs tied and won the game in the final minute.
- Carson Dickey scored the game-tying goal with 53.8 seconds remaining and finished the game with four goals, five offensive points (1 assist) and five draw controls.
- Courtney Havel then scored the game-winner with 24.2 seconds to go.
- Dickey has now scored four or more goals in three straight games. She leads the RMAC with 14.
- Cameron Flynn also recorded her first career hat trick with four goals.
- Goalkeeper Heather Hawkins made eight saves and also led the Mavs with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
- The Mavs (1-4) have played four nationally-ranked squads from Florida this season.
- They will close out a 3-game homestand on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. against undefeated Northern Michigan (4-0).
- The Mavs will then to Pueblo to take on Rockhurst (Mo.) in a neutral-site game at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Men's Lacrosse
- The Maverick men will resume their season on Thursday when they host Florida Southern in their home-opener at 7 p.m.
- CMU is 2-0 and ranked 11th in the latest USILA Division II Coaches Poll, released on Monday.
- They had been ranked tenth last week.
- CMU last played more than two weeks ago of Feb. 14, defeating Adams State 19-4 in their RMAC opener in Alamosa.
- Thursday's game against the Mocs will be their first of six regular season home games this season.
- It is also their first of four straight against teams from Florida.
- Florida Southern will also take on Adams State in a neutral-site match-up on the CMU campus on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
- Dillon Pless leads the Mavericks with five goals and six points in the first two games.
- Shaden Shields leads the Mavericks goalkeepers with 11 saves, a 6.21 goals against average and .647 save percentage.
Swimming & Diving
Women's Tennis
- The Maverick women split a rare home weekend and are now 7-6 overall.
- They have won four out of their last five matches.
- CMU dropped a 7-0 decision to NCAA Division I Utah Tech on Friday.
- The Mavs then bounced back to claim a 5-2 win over Colorado College, ranked 35th in Division III on Saturday.
- Prior to that win, the Mavericks recognized four team members during a Senior Day presentation.
- The Mavs won three of the four 3-set matches in that dual after winning the doubles point thanks to a tiebreaker win at No. 3 doubles.
- Catalina Ballon and Delia Maier both went 2-0 during the win.
- Devyn Rodriguez now leads the team with a 12-6 singles record.
- Maier (10-5) and Ballon (10-8) are also in double figures.
- Ballon and Maier are also 13-6 in doubles as is the all-freshman duo of Valentina Gonzalez and Sophie Hartman.
- The Mavs will now play their most important weekend of the season when they head to Lubbock, Texas for three matches against fellow NCAA Division II South Central Region opponents.
- The Mavs are currently 2-0 against regional opponents and have a 3-1 "in-region" record.
- They will play Cameron on Friday morning and then take on No. 13 St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
Men's Tennis
- The Mavs won their only two home matches of the season, defeating Colorado College by 4-3 and 5-2 scores on Saturday.
- The Mavericks recognized six seniors in between the matches and also had an Alumni Reunion weekend, welcoming back Maverick tennis players from six different decades.
- The Mavericks are now 5-5 overall and have won four straight matches for the first time since the start of the 2023 spring season.
- Seniors Henry Scheck, Emil Hultman and William Leschig all went 2-0 in singles matches on Saturday.
- Hultman is now 14-4 this season and has won five straight decisions.
- Leschig (10-8) and Scheck (9-8) have both won four straight singles matches.
- The Mavs dropped the doubles point in both duals, but rallied to win four of the six singles matches, five of which went to three sets, to take the morning dual.
- The Mavs then claimed five of the six singles matches in the nightcap.
- The Mavs now face their most important weekend of the season to date, heading to Lubbock, Texas for three matches against fellow NCAA Division II South Central opponents on Friday and Saturday.
- The Mavs will take on Cameron on Friday morning before facing St. Mary's and sixth-ranked Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
Men's Golf
Beach Volleyball
- The Mavericks were off from competition last week preparing for their only home competitions of the season this coming weekend.
- The Mavericks will host junior college foes Central Wyoming and Trinidad State in the Maverick Invitational, which will be played in tri-dual formats on both Friday and Saturday.
- Matches are slated for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. but will be played on a rolling schedule and starting no more than 15 minutes early.
- The Mavs will play in the 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. windows on both days while Central Wyoming & Trinidad State will play against each other in the 1 p.m. window.
- The Mavs will recognized their four seniors on Saturday before the final match at approximately 2:45 p.m.
- The Mavericks are a perfect 25-0 on home sand throughout their program history, now in season No. 11.
