Senior Day Sweep

CMU claims 4-3, 5-2 wins in only home matches of 2026

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Emil Hultman, William Leschig and Henry Scheck all went 2-0 in singles play as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team swept visiting Colorado College by 4-3 and 5-2 scores in a Saturday Senior Day doubleheader at the Elliott Tennis Center.

The Mavericks, playing their only home matches of the entire season, have now won four straight duals while improving their overall record to 5-5.

They have now won five straight home matches over two seasons.

The NCAA Division III Tigers were playing for the first time this spring and are now 0-1.  They pre-declared the second dual as an exhibition.

The three aforementioned Maverick seniors were recognized between the two matches along with Diogo Manzano, who went 1-1 in singles, Jamison Pfingston and Shawn Springer.

In the morning's 4-3 win, the Mavericks dropped two of the three doubles matches but rallied back to win in each of the top four singles flights as Manzano clinched the dual with a thrilling 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-2) win over Sam Dilworth at No. 2 singles.

Scheck and Hultman also won 3-set affairs in the No. 1 and 3 flights while Leschig had a much easier 6-3, 6-1 win over Ross Cockrell at No. 4 singles.

The German senior's win evened the dual at 1 before Hultman came from a set down to defeat Lehmitz, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) to give the Mavs a 2-1 overall lead.

Meanwhile, Scheck won over Dominik Kaminski, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) in the top flight.

The Tigers won 3-set matches at No. 5 and 6 singles before and after Manzano's clincher.

Leschig and Scheck were also 6-1 winners over Kaminski and Justin Boder in the top doubles flight.

The Mavericks also rallied from behind in the nightcap after dropping the doubles point.

However, they were able to win five singles matches as freshman Gavin Hutter provided the clinching win by a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 margin over Sam Lessard at No. 5 singles before Luke Burriesci won at No. 6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

Earlier, Hultman won by retirement at No. 4 singles before Leschig stopped Lehmitz, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3.

Scheck then outlasted Sam Dilworth, 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-4) in three sets in the second flight as he and Manzano switched spots to avoid repeat matchups.

CMU will look for its first NCAA Division II wins next week when they head to Lubbock, Texas for three matches against fellow South Central Region opponents Cameron, St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian.
