LUBBOCK, Texas— William Leschig and
Henry Scheck combined to take down the nation's sixth-ranked doubles team before Leschig won his No. 4 singles match, highlights of the day for the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team, which fell 5-2 to No. 35 Cameron University on Friday morning here at Lubbock Christian University's Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
The Mavericks fell to 5-6 overall and saw their 4-match winning streak snapped while the Aggies moved to 4-2.
Leschig and Scheck, ranked 32
nd in the ITA's NCAA Division II National Doubles Rankings, squeaked past the Aggies' top duo of Lukas Janousek and Noe Milliard by 7-6 (7-5) margin in the No. 1 doubles match.
Luke Burriersci and
Jamison Pfingston then finished off an equally thrilling 7-6 (8-6) win over Tom Debonne and Zoheir Fardoun at No. 3 doubles as the Mavs won two of the three doubles affairs to take the doubles point for the first time in seven duals.
However, the nationally-ranked Aggies came back in singles play to win five of the six matches.
Leschig was the Mavs' lone winner, claiming a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Abubakari Yakuba-Lea.
Amongst the Aggies winners were Janousek, ranked fourth nationally, and Milliard, ranked 75
th.
Janousek won 6-4, 6-1 over Scheck while Milliard won 6-2, 6-3 over CMU's
Diogo Manzano.
Notably, Burriesci won the second set of his No. 6 singles match over Fardoun, but dropped the match-tiebreaker in the 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) match.
CMU will play two more regional matches on Saturday playing St. Mary's at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain) before facing third-ranked Lubbock Christian in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CST (1:30 p.m. Mountain).
