GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team won their second consecutive conference series this afternoon as they split a second day double header against the MSU Roadrunners at CMU Softball Field.
The Mavericks claim the series with a 3-1 record with them winning game four in today's two contests after narrowly falling 1-0 in game three. Their game four victory came by a score of 10-2 in contrast while only going five innings after the Mavs captured the mercy rule decision.
This was their first run-rule victory of the season with it being their second-best offensive performance of the year.
Colorado Mesa is now 7-9 overall while owning a 6-2 record in RMAC play. They are currently tied for second place in the conference standings. MSU Denver sits at 10-6 (5-3 RMAC).
Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (MSUD 1, CMU 0):
The Mavs fell by a score of 1-0 in their opening game of the day after a one-run second inning proved to be just enough offense to take the victory.
That one-run came off the bat of MSUD's Brooklyn Enny who hit a solo home run.
Beyond Enny's long ball, the Roadrunners were limited to just six other hits in the entire game with strong pitching being the theme of the game.
The Mavs were limited to just five hits themselves as they were stifled by the Roadrunners' pitching performance as well.
Both pitchers pitched complete games in the effort with Metro's Natalie Romero narrowly claiming the win over CMU's Sophia Tassinari.
Romero went all seven innings with five hits and one walk while Tassinari allowed just seven hits and struck out three.
Both pitchers threw under 100 pitches in the game with there being four different 1-2-3 frames.
Of the Mavs' five hits, Brynn Escobar, Allison Lindsay, Khloe Kubitschek, Makayla Westmoreland and Cailynn Parsons each had one apiece.
GAME 2 (CMU 10, MSUD 2; 5 innings):
Bouncing back to claim the series win in an empathic way, the Mavs recorded 10 runs on 12 hits to close the day as they run-ruled an opponent for the first time this season.
Colorado Mesa scored two runs in the first, one run in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fifth as they scored in four of the five innings possible.
They took the lead and never looked back in the first inning with them scoring just four batters into the game.
Allison Lindsay was responsible for that first run with her knocking in one on a fielder's choice. Ava Stephens then brought in another run that frame, courtesy of an RBI single.
A Brynn Escobar double brought the game's third run in during the second inning before the Mavs then scored seven runs between the fourth and fifth innings.
During that time Molli Magaña, Lindsay, TK Landes, Escobar and Makayla Westmoreland each had RBIs.
Magaña was responsible for the eventual run-rule winning hit as she concluded the game on an RBI single to right field.
Marisa Nehm earned the victory in the circle improving her record to 3-2 on the season while pitching to her first complete game.
She allowed just two hits to the Roadrunners with the only two runs she gave up being on a homerun in the fourth. She needed just 59 pitches total through those five innings.
Of the Mavs 12 hits, there were four doubles with four different players having multi-hit performances. TK Landes led the team going 3-3 while Escobar, Magaña, and Paige Pierce each had two hits themselves.
UP NEXT:
The Mavs will begin an 8-game road stretch when they head to Golden, Colorado this next weekend to take on Colorado School of Mines for another pair of doubleheaders. Games are set for Saturday (Mar. 7) and Sunday (Mar. 8) with streaming available through the RMAC Network.
