GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa baseball completed an improbable comeback to sweep the No. 13 Augustana Vikings after a 15-8 win on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.
The Mavericks (14-2, 0-0 RMAC) fell behind 8-0 after the completion of the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom half,
Keegan Landis sent an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left center field to put them on the board 8-2.
After holding the Vikings to zero runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Mavericks went to work. They sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs on eight hits in the inning to take a 15-8 lead.
Ezra Farmer hit a two-run home run to get the scoring going in the inning. For Farmer, it was third home run of the season and made the score 8-4 at the time.
After a
Keegan Landis two-run double that cut the lead to two,
Kennedy Hara stepped to the plate two batters later. The senior shortstop delivered a two-run double to tie the game at 8-8.
A bases loaded walk by
Ezra Farmer gave Colorado Mesa their first lead of the game at 9-8.
Rocco DiFrancesco had the final blow of the bottom of the eighth inning as he hit a 1-2 pitch into right field that brought home
Joey Blank and
Keegan Landis.
The Colorado Mesa record for runs in an inning came on April 26, 2008 when they scored 18 runs in the top of the ninth inning in a 41-7 win over Colorado Christian at All-Star Park.
Landis finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, home run, three runs scored and five runs driven in. The junior entered the game defensively in the top of the fifth and made the most of his opportunity.
Cameron Cartwright and
Rocco DiFrancesco each finished with two hits in the game.
Jett Walker earned the win after pitching a hitless eighth inning. Walker was one of seven pitchers that pitched in the game.
Cole Seward made his return to the mound after an injury kept him sidelined last season. It was his first appearance since May 17, 2024 at Angelo State. Seward allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and struck out one in two innings pitched.
The Mavericks will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next Friday when they host New Mexico Highlands beginning on Friday at 3pm.
