GUNNISON, Colo.— Sprinters
Teo Casados and
Joseph Randolph won Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles with record-setting times to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's track and field team to a strong third place finish at the conference meet on Saturday here at Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Field House.
Casados broke his own CMU record with a 60-meter time of 6.69 seconds as the Mavericks claimed four of the top six places in that event while scoring 26 of their 65 total team points in that event.
Meanwhile, Randolph set a Mountaineer Field House record time of 21.45 seconds in the 200 after taking fourth in the 60 with a season-best matching mark of 6.82 seconds.
Marik Cummings also ended up on the 60-meter podium with a second place time of 6.80 seconds while
Amaris Mora finished sixth in 6.86.
The Mavs also picked up pa fourth place time of 1:54.45 from freshman
Vasileios Salpas in the 800 meters.
In the field,
Asa Keim finished sixth in the heptathlon while
Van Chambers and
Jalen Hale both claimed seventh in the shot put and triple jump, respectively. Freshman
Devin Shea also scored a team point with an eighth place high jump finish.
Casados' 60-meter time was a single hundredth of a second quicker than his former record time of 6.70 seconds set at CMU's season-opener in December. He had also matched that time in the preliminary round of the RMAC Championships on Friday.
The redshirt senior now has four career RMAC titles but won his first indoor crown on Saturday.
Randolph matched his season-best in the 60 and then broke CMU Elijah Williams' former track record of 21.51 seconds in the 200 as the lone Maverick finalist in the 200.
The Mavs were not as lucky in the 60-meter hurdles as
Solomon Griffen did not finish after qualifying first in Friday's preliminary round. The 4x400-mete relay team also did not finish.
Elsewhere,
Kyle Towne took ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.74 while Salpas ran in the following heat to take fourth.
In the high jump, Shea set a season-best with a clearance of 1.96 meters (6-5) to move in to the No. 10 spot of program history.
Grant Nemeth finished right behind, taking ninth with a clearance of 1.91 meters (6-3.25).
Benson White finished 11
th at 1.86 meters (6-1.25).
Hale recorded an effort of 13.93 meters (45-8.5) in the triple jump while
Weston Domich jumped 13.59 meters (44-7) to place 14
th after taking eighth in Friday's long jump.
Chambers finished with a weight throw effort of 17.31 meters (56-9.5) while
Kaiden Major finished with a mark of 15.64 meters (51-3.75) to finish 14
th.
After winning the bronze medal in the pole vault on Friday, Keim finished with 4,522 points in the heptathlon. He had a 60-meter hurdle time of 9.40 seconds before faring best in the 18-man field with a pole vault mark of 4.50 meters (14-9). Keim then finished the meet with a 1,000-meter time of 3:12.80.
UCCS won the team title with 124 points while the Colorado School of Mines was second with 84. The Mavs edged CSU Pueblo by two points and were nine and 11 ahead of Adams State and Western Colorado, respectively.
With their times from earlier in the season, Randolph and Casados will earn NCAA Division II Championship selection in the 200 meters on Tuesday while Casados will have an outside chance of being selected in the 60 meters as he now ranks 21
st on the season-long national performance list with his altitude-adjusted time of 6.73 seconds. Griffen will also have an outside chance of selection in the 60-meter hurdles and currently ranks 20
th in the country as of late Saturday night.
The top 18 declared student-athletes in each individual event will earn trips to Virginia Beach, Virginia for the Mar. 13-14 meet.
