STOCKTON, Calif. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team completed their first tournament of the spring on Tuesday (Feb. 24) afternoon as they finished in eighth place at the DII Visit Stockton Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
The Mavericks shot a 3-over, 291 as a team in Tuesday's second and final round of the tournament. That score was three strokes better than their round one score, but they lost three spots on the team leaderboard. They finished with a 584 which was one stroke behind Cal State Monterey Bay who shot a 4-under as a team in the final round.
RMAC foe CSU Pueblo won the team title with a 7-under, 569 which was seven strokes better than second-place Western Washington who shot 8-under as a team in the final round.
Luke Wagstaff led the Mavericks with a T-13
th finish after a 3-under, 69 in today's final round. He finished with a two-round total of 2-under, 142 and finished three strokes off the lead.
The McKinney, Texas native started today's round with three birdies in the first six holes before bogeying hole No. 7. He had two birdies to start the back nine before sandwiching his final birdie between a pair of bogeys on holes 13, 14, and 15.
Leo Lavalle finished in a tie for 20
th place after shooting 4-over in his final round. He was in contention after the first round where he shot a 1-over, 73 but was only able to card one birdie in today's final round.
Timmy Cavarno (+6),
Dylan Everett (+6) and
Jacob Gonzalez (+6) all finished in a tie for 49
th on the individual leaderboard. Everett had the best score of the group on Tuesday with a 1-over, 73.
Western Washington's Rex Wilson moved up 14 spots on the leaderboard to take home medalist honors with a 5-under, 139.
The Mavericks will continue with their early spring schedule as they travel to Sin City for the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Boulder Creek Golf Course.
