#4 Mavs make history in win over Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. – In a season where history was made on several occasions, even more history was made on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon. No. 4 Colorado Mesa defeated Black Hills State 79-66 to cap an undefeated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.

It was the first time a team in the conference finished the season undefeated in 30 years as the 1995-96 Nebraska-Kearney Lopers were the last to accomplish the feat. It is the sixth time in the conference's rich history that an undefeated season has happened.

That was the only historical thing that happened in the Mavericks win over the Yellow Jackets.

Senior Olivia Reed Thyne recorded the first ever triple-double in program history as she finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in the regular season finale for the Mavericks. She shot 80 percent (8-for-10) from the field including 1-for-1 from three and 7-for-7 from the line.

At the 4:40 mark of the fourth quarter, Reed Thyne dished a pass out to Brooke Eyre who buried a three-pointer to give her the 10th assist to check that box off the feat.

Then, with 2:13 to play, was able to block a shot from Yellow Jacket Bradie Schlabs and then grab the rebound for her 10th of the game for the final piece of the puzzle.

It is the first triple double of the season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the 20th across all of Division II.

Colorado Mesa got off to a hot start leading 28-16 after the first quarter where they shot 76.9 percent from the field and 4-for-5 from three. They went ice cold in the second quarter and were outscored 21-7 in the second quarter to trail at the half 37-35. It was the first time trailing at the break since January 8 when they trailed at New Mexico Highlands 41-38.

The Mavericks came out firing in the second half as they shot 66.7 percent from the field and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half. They outscored Black Hills State 44-29 in the second half.

They made their move at the end of the third quarter as they went on a 12-0 run from 6:25 mark when Black Hills State led 45-39 until the 41 second mark of the third quarter when the Mavericks took a 51-45 lead.

The Mavericks led by as many as 16 points a couple times late in the fourth quarter.

Mason Rowland finished with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists while Mykaela Moore added 17 points and five rebounds.

Black Hills had four players finish in double figures led by the 18 points from Brinlee McRae.

The playoff push starts this upcoming week for the Mavericks as they are set to host Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday in the first round of the RMAC Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm and should the Mavericks win they would host the semifinals and finals in Brownson Arena.
