Mavericks off to a hot start at the Las Vegas Classic

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The No. 19 Colorado Mesa men's golf team opened play at the Las Vegas Desert Classic on Sunday (Mar. 1) afternoon at Boulder Creek Golf Club and hosted by Missouri-St. Louis.
 
The field of teams for the tournament features 15 of the top-50 teams in the country according to the Clippd/Scoreboard rankings. The site of the tournament is also the site of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship which will take place in April.
 
After the first round, the Mavericks sit in second place in the team standings after shooting a 2-over, 290. The Mavericks trail only No. 4 ranked Florida Southern who is just one stroke better at 289. Lincoln Memorial (No. 34) and Cal State Monterey Bay are a shot back at 291.
 
West Florida, the top ranked team in the field at No. 3, is in 10th place at 296 after round one.
 
Jacob Gonzalez and Timmy Cavarno tied for the team lead in the first round with matching 1-under, 71's to sit in a tie for seventh place.
 
Gonzalez finished his round with birdies on No. 5, No. 8, and No. 13 with bogeys on No. 12 and No. 15. He finished the front nine or Coyote Run nine at 2-under, 34 and was 2-under until a bogey on his final hole of the day (No.12).
 
Cavarno caught fire after his first two holes of the day. He had a run of five birdies in nine holes after shooting a double-bogey and a bogey in his first two holes of the round. He closed his final nine holes of his round at even-par.
 
Leo Lavalle shot a first round score of 1-over, 73 and Dylan Everett finished at 3-over, 75 to round out the Maverick scorers.
 
West Texas A&M's Luis Palomo, ranked No. 31 in the Clippd Individual Rankings, leads the medalist race with a 5-under, 67.  
 
The Mavericks will tee-off in the second round at 9:00am mountain time tomorrow in a shotgun start.
