Mavs to head to Golden for two smaller Mines meets

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University track and field teams will continue their outdoor season this week competing in a pair of smaller meets hosted by the Colorado School of Mines which will be contested on revised schedule due to weather forecasts in Golden.

The Mavs will now send a contingent to the Mines Midweek & Multi, which begins Wednesday and continues Thursday with the second day of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon.

Another contingent will also then go to the abbreviated Mines Kit Mayer Classic on Saturday.

There is little crossover of the events that will be contested in each meet.  Different Maverick groups are entered.

These meets will be the last chance for many of the Mavericks to potentially qualify for the RMAC Championships later this month.

Live results for both meets can be accessed here.

Recaps of the Mavericks' efforts will be posted each evening on www.cmumavericks.com.

Last Time Out (Home)

The bulk of the Maverick squad were in action at home last week as CMU hosted the High Desert Dental Maverick Invitational.

The Mavs won seven events during the meet, which featured around 350 athletes from eight different teams.

Maverick seniors Megan Hodges and Kaelea Gibson both set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks, highlighting each day.

Hodges ran to a time of 17 minutes, 12.76 seconds in the 5,000 meters on Thursday night, which converted to 16:48.27 with the altitude adjustments.

Gibson then set a series of personal-bests in Friday's high jump, ending up with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5-7).

Augustine Hancock won the women's hammer throw on Thursday while Aidan Brownell (110m Hurdles), Logan Hafey (400m Hurdles), Van Chambers (Discus Throw), Brooke Miller (800m), Olivia Langner (100m Hurdles) and Gibson (High Jump) claimed event wins in Friday's portion of the meet.

Last Time Out (Texas)

A separate and small group of Maverick athletes also competed in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin last Thursday-Saturday.

Teo Casados led that group, setting the fastest all-conditions 100-meter time in program history on Friday before adding another NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time in the invitational section of the 200 meters on Saturday.

Meet Schedules

According to the most recent preliminary schedule, Wednesday's Midweek Meet will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the open divisions of the hammer throw.  Javelin throw and long and triple jump events will also be contested during the day.

Track events in the sprints, hurdles and relays will be contested in the late afternoon hours between 4:30 and 6:45 p.m.

The first day's combined events (heptathlon/decathlon) begin at 12:30 p.m.

The second day's combined events also begin at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

A finalized schedule will be created following the entry deadline on Tuesday afternoon.

Saturday's Kit Mayer Classic will begin at 10 a.m., according to the preliminary schedule, with action on the track in the mid-distance and distance running events between 400 and 10,000 meters in a condensed 3 ½ hour window.

Field event competition will begin and Noon, featuring the discus and shot put for the throwers and the high jump and pole vault.

National Team Ranking

The Maverick men are 19th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's NCAA Division II TFRI (Track & Field Ratings Index), which was published on Tuesday.

The Mavericks currently have 99.58 points in the computerized rankings at Checkpoint #2.

They were ranked 14th at Checkpoint #1 last week.

The Maverick women are now ranked 38th after sitting 42nd at the first checkpoint.

#EventSquad

The Maverick men also rank first in the USTFCCCA's #EventSquad rankings for the triple jump and sit second for the triple jump.  Those rankings are determined by adding the top marks from four different athletes in each individual event.

The Mavs' have a total of 57.91 meters in the men's triple jump and 28.64 meters in the long jump with five different athletes contributing to the total.  Antone Higgs, who ranks eighth nationally in the triple jump, leads the Mavs in both.

CMU's men also hold another top 10 ranking of eighth in the 100 meters.

The Maverick women also have a No. 5 ranking in the 5K with a combined time of 1:08.51.64 and rank sixth in the discus throw, seventh in the 1500 meters and ninth in the 400 meter hurdles.

NCAA Lists

Adding four new marks at last week's two meets, the Mavericks have now combined to set 13 NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks, including five that put the Mavs in the top ten of the country.

Here's a look at all of the Mavs' current national rankings, which they hope will hold up for national selection.  The top 22 declared athletes in each individual event will earn NCAA selection for the May 21-23 meet in Emporia, Kansas.  The top 16 relay teams in each event will also be selected as will the top 16 declared men's decathletes and women's heptathletes.
