PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University track and field teams combined for four NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks and a pair of school records during a solid overall day of marks at the Chuck Haering Classic on Saturday here at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.
Kaiya Graves, who won the discus throw, and the women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Hannah Schissler,
Elaina Arcand,
Waycee Harvey and
Kammi Merritt, set the new school records as the Mavericks also racked up nine second place finishes and two third place marks.
Graves, who broke her own javelin throw school record just nine days ago, recorded her discus throw effort of 47.30 meters (155 feet, 2 inches) to better Heather Yackey's record of 46.77 meters (153-5) from the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Graves' mark was also one of the Mavs' NCAA provisional qualifying efforts.
Meanwhile, the women's 4x400-meter relay team posted a time of 3:47.52, 1.37 seconds quicker than the 2021 CMU standard of 3:48.89 to take second.
The Maverick women also shined in the 4x100-meter relay as Merritt,
Sylvia Johansen,
Genesis Nehmer and Schissler set an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 46.08 seconds, also finishing second.
The Maverick men also had two national qualifying marks as
Aidan Brownell finished second in 52.38 seconds, just of his career-best of 52.35 from last year. The sophomore finished second in both hurdling events, turning in a time of 14.81 in the 110-meter discipline.
Meanwhile,
Joseph Randolph took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.94 seconds, adding his name to the national championship consideration list.
The Mavs also had plenty of other highlights throughout the day.
In the 100 meters,
Marik Cummings took third in 10.55 seconds while Randolph moved to the No. 4 spot in his CMU debut in that event with a time of 10.59 seconds, good for fifth place.
Amaris Mora also matched is career-best of 10.66 seconds to finish seventh.
Mora later nabbed a career-best of 21.40 in the 200, taking fourth place while also moving up four spots to fourth in program history.
In the 400 meters, freshman
Jordan Fraser posted a time of 48.96 seconds in his CMU outdoor debut and now ranks sixth in program history.
Trevor Kendall now ranks seventh in program history for the 110-hurdles as he took fourth behind Brownell with a time of 15.08 seconds.
Freshman
Blake Ames also sits seventh on the Mavs' all-time chart in the 400 hurdles, after posting a time of 55.49 seconds.
Brownell,
Blake Anderson, Fraser and Randolph then capped the day with a second place time of 3:18.94 in the men's 4x400-meter relay, tenth quickest in Maverick history.
The Maverick men also posted some strong field event marks.
Devin Shea cleared 1.97 meters (6-5.5) in the high jump and now ranks sixth in CMU history. He also took fifth in the long jump with a mark of 7.23 meters (23-8.75) to go into the No. 7 spot of program history.
Meanwhile,
Antone Higgs finished second in that event with a season-best of 7.29 meters (23-11) while freshman
Weston Domich took fourth with a wind-aided 7.24 meters (23-9).
Sophomore
Van Chambers also had a career-best discus throw effort of 47.70 meters (156-6) to finish second and move up a spot to sixth in CMU history.
The Maverick women also had several strong field event efforts throughout the day as
Addy Kirkpatrick recorded an outdoor career-best of 5.51 meters (18-1) to take second while
Addison Hayes, who won the triple jump on Friday, had a collegiate best of 5.32 meters (17-5.5).
Kaelea Gibson was also able to clear 1.63 meters (5-4.25) to finish third in the high jump.
On the track, Merritt finished the 100 meters in a wind-aided 11.96 seconds while Nehmer turned in a time of 12.25 to rank tenth in CMU history.
Schissler also had a wind-aided time of 24.38 seconds to finish third in the 200.
Autumn McQuitty also ran to a career-best time of 17:04.74 in the 5,000 meters and continues to sit sixth in CMU history.
Wehazit Kelati also had a strong effort of 17:56.09 and now ranks seventh in Maverick lore..
The Mavericks will be back in action in five days when they host the High Desert Dental Maverick Invitational on Thursday and Friday (Apr. 2-3).
