Hayes wins as Mavs open up Pueblo weekend

CMU athletes record four new top-10 program marks

PUEBLO, Colo.— Freshman Addison Hayes won the women's triple jump to lead a contingent of Colorado Mesa University field athletes in the opening session of the Chuck Haering Invitational on Friday afternoon here at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.

Hayes recorded a mark of 11.11 meters (36 feet, 5 ½ inches) on her final attempt to snag the win over teammate Kendra Ritzmann, who took second at 10.93 meters (35-10.5).

Hayes' mark will put her seventh on CMU's all-time outdoor performers list pending the wind readings, which were not posted on the live results as of Friday night.

The win was the first of Hayes' collegiate career to date.

Addy Kirkpatrick also competed, finishing fourth at 10.76 meters (35-3.75).

Meanwhile, Salem Brunk led a group of four Maverick men in the triple jump.  He finished third with a mark of 14.35 meters (47-1), just ahead of freshman Weston Domich, who took fourth with a career-best of 14.22 meters (46-8).  He now ranks tenth in CMU outdoor history, pending a legal wind reading.

Fellow Freshman Jalen Hale placed fifth at 14.06 meters (46-1.5) while Antone Higgs finished seventh at 13.19 meters (43-3.25) on his lone legal attempt.  He fouled the second and passed on his remaining four.

The hammer and javelin throws were also held on Friday and saw Augustine Hancock take third in the women's hammer throw at 50.05 meters (164-2) while Elly Thiem was eighth with an effort of 37.70 meters (123-8).

Van Chambers led the Mavs on the men's side with a eighth place mark of 48.14 meters (157-11).  Kaiden Major was tenth at 46.72 meters (153-3) while Austin Schultz recorded a career-best of 46.18 meters (151-5) to finish 11th.

Ritzmann also competed in the javelin throw, placing fourth with a mark of 37.37 meters (122-7), nearly nine feet further than her debut at last week's home meet.  She moved all the way to fourth in program history with the mark.

Kylie Mayer also had an improved mark of 34.79 meters (114-1) to place eighth and take over the No. 10 spot in program history.

A bulk of the meet will be contested on Saturday, staring with running events at 9 a.m. and more field events at 10 a.m.
