GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's & women's swimming teams won seven gold medals, sweeping the medals in two events and the wins in all four relay races while the nation's top-ranked Maverick women capped the night with a pair of meet records as both Mavericks extended their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship leads during a phenomenal Wednesday night of action here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The Mavericks, gunning for a seventh straight team title sweep now lead the women's scoring chase by 320 points while the Maverick men, ranked second in the NCAA Division II Swimcloud Rankings, are now 146 clear with two days of the championship remaining.
The Mavs have now won 14 of the meet's 20 completed events, including all six relay events.
CMU's women now have 923 points after claiming three gold medals, the last of which came in the 400-yard medley relay. The Mavs won that event, the last women's event of the night, in a RMAC Championship record time of three minutes, 40.88 seconds while
Agata Naskret led that team off with a RMAC record time of 52.28 seconds with her 100 back split time. Last year's RMAC Swimmer of the Year, Naskret had set the NCAA Division II and pool records earlier in the season.
Antonia Leese,
Kiara Borchardt and
Ada Qunell then kept extending the Mavs' lead as CMU ended up nearly six seconds ahead of Oklahoma Christian's second place team.
The Maverick "B" team of
Taylar Hooton,
Kate Speerschneider,
Anna Beck and
Kendyll Wilkinson also won their race with a time of 3:45.93, besting OC's time, while officially placing tenth behind all of the "A" squads.
Borchardt also won an individual title at the start of the session, winning the 100 fly in 54.97 seconds while Beck took fifth in 56.30 seconds. Freshman
Taylar Hooton also won the "B" final in 57.45 seconds.
The Mavs then dominated the 400 individual medley as
Sophia Bains took her IM title in as many nights with a time of 4:25.86, besting teammates
Haven Hinkle (4:30.08) and
Tori Bartusiak (4:03.09), who joined Bains on the podium.
CMU also fared well in the 200 free, putting five swimmers in the championship final as Wilkinson broke her own school record with a time of 1:49.31 (1:48.11-converted) to finish third in an incredibly fast event that saw all eight championship finalists and five consolation finalists set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times.
Simon Fraser's Tori Meklensek, who set the RMAC Championship and pool record time of 1:47.86 during the 800 Free Relay on Tuesday night, came roaring from behind to take the gold in 1:48.81 while OC's Tammy Greenwood, the 50 Free winner on Wednesday, finished second in 1:49.25.
Maverick fifth-year senior
Katerina Matoskova finished behind Wilkinson in 1:50.36 while
Olivia Hansson took fifth in 1:51.04.
Hanna Sasivarevic (1:51.32) also moved into the Mavs' all-time top 10 to take sixth in 1:51.32 (1:50.02-converted) while Qunell rounded out the final in 1:52.71.
Meanwhile, the CMU men, were able to claim four victories in just five contested events throughout the night.
Serbian senior
Dejan Urbanek won his fourth consecutive 100 fly title to begin the string, taking the gold in 47.96 seconds while teammate
Austin Patterson claimed second in with a NCAA provisional qualifying and Maverik all-time top 10 performer mark of 48.55 (48.45-converted) seconds. Team captain
Andrew Scoggin also finished a strong fifth in 48.90 seconds.
Two events later, Polish senior
Kuba Kiszczak won the 200 free in a career-best time of 1:37.64 (1:36.44-converted).
Jackson Moe also took fourth in 1:39.98 while
Marcos Otero (1:41.35) and
Richard Schmiedefeld (1:42.24) finished sixth and seventh after both set faster times in the morning preliminaries.
Jameson McEnaney also won the consolation final in 1:40.51.
Action then turned to the 3-meter diving boards as the Mavs swept the medals with junior college transfer
Ryan Campbell claiming his first RMAC title with a score of 564.25 points, ahead of
Jax Juarros (530.10) and
Wyatt Hermanson (524.85).
Hermanson had the best score of the day, qualifying first out of the preliminaries with 569.45 points as five different Maverick men, including
David Roethlisberger and
Aiden Coon surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard of 460 points. Roethlisberger (527.25) and Coon (468.90) were competing as exhibition divers and were not eligible to advance to the final.
The Mavs then completed their gold-medal winning night in the 400 medley relay as Scoggin,
Forrest Frazier, Urbanek and McEnaney cruised to the win in 3:14.55, beating Mines by 3.76 seconds.
The CMU "B" team was also faster than Mines' top squad, winning the earlier section in 3:15.80 with
Luka Samsonov,
Max Ayres, Patterson and Otero managing secondary squad duties.
CMU swimmers also added a trio of NCAA provisional qualifying times in the time trial races with
Mauricio Posadas finishing the Maverick night with an intense celebration after touching in the 200 breast with a career-best time of 1:59.33 (1:58.13-converted) to move into third on the Mavs' all-time top charts.
Brodie Khajuria, who finished a 100 breast time trial in 54.55 (54.45-converted) seconds and
Reagan Horn, who finished the 100 free in 51.06 (50.96-converted) also added NCAA "B" cut times after likely securing NCAA Championship spots with Wednesday night time trial efforts.
