EVANSVILLE, Ind.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks qualified three women for the championship finals and will have eight swimmers in the consolation finals after faring well during the Friday morning session at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships here in the Deaconess Aquatics Center.
Additionally, the Mavericks qualified all four of their men's divers for the 3-meter championship final and will be represented in all 11 of the event finals that will be contested on Friday evening, starting at 5:30 p.m. CDT (4:30 p.m. Mountain), including the men's and women's 200 free relays.
Here's an event-by-event breakdown of the Mavericks' efforts from the preliminary rounds.
500 Free
Olivia Hansson and
Hanna Sasivarevic both snagged spots in the women's championship final. Hansson won her heat and qualified third in 4:52.84 while Sasivarevic finished eighth in 4:54.83.
On the men's side,
Jonas Friess registered a career-best of 4:24.98 to take 13
th in the preliminaries and snag a lane in the consolation final. His time also allowed him to move up two spots to seventh in CMU history. He was seeded 22
nd on the pre-meet psych sheet.
Gavyn Tatge finished 27
th in 4:30.56 while
Ben Vester was 29
th in 4:31.62.
Meanwhile,
Maya Clise finished 35
th in the women's preliminaries with a time of 5:10.77.
100 Backstroke
Taylar Hooton also claimed a championship final spot, qualifying fifth in 54.75 seconds.
Freshman
Abby Uhl finished 29
th in 56.59 seconds.
Meanwhile, both Maverick men qualified for the consolation final.
Luka Samsonov finished the preliminaries in 12
th place with a time of 47.71 seconds while
Richard Schmiedefeld continued his strong week with a 15
th place time of 47.79, which moves him up a spot to sixth in program history. The German was seeded 23
rd before the meet while Samsnov was seeded 11
th.
100 Breaststroke
Melina Giraudeau finished tenth in the preliminary heats with a time of 1:02.16, just off her career-best of 1:02.10 and will swim in the consolation finals for a third straight night after doing so in both of the individual medleys on Wednesday and Thursday.
Antonia Leese was the Mavs' other entrant in the women's half of the event and finished 29
th in 1:04.18.
Meanwhile,
Aron Jonsson and
Marcos Otero both snagged spots in the consolation final as both improved on their pre-meet seeds. Jonsson finished the preliminaries in 12
th with a time of 54.05. Otero also moved up two spots from his pre-meet No. 18 seed to take 16
th and grab the last scoring spot. He was timed in 54.38 seconds.
Brodie Khajuria also competed, finishing 24
th in 55.23 seconds.
200 Butterfly
Freshman
Eva Lehmkuhler snagged the final spot in the consolation final, placing 16
th in the preliminary heats with a time of 2:04.30. She also edged senior teammate
Kiara Borchardt, who will be the first alternate after finishing 17
th in 2:04.38.
Sydnee O'Neil and
Tori Bartusiak also finished in consecutive places as O'Neil took 22
nd in 2:04.76 while Bartusiak was 23rd after touching in 2:05.43.
On the men's side,
Micah Moore took 15
th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:46.21, just off his season-best of 1:45.83. He will be the Mavs' lone representative in the finals.
Fellow NCAA Championship newcomers
Nathan Knobelspiesse and
Ethan Gluck finished 28
th and 30
th, respectively. Knobelspiesse was timed in 1:48.88 while Gluck touched in 1:49.43.
Men's 3-Meter Diving
The Mavericks had a superb performance as all four of the men finished amongst the top eight of the 18-man field in the 3-meter diving preliminaries.
Ryan Campbell, who took second in Wednesday's night's 1-meter final, led the way, scoring 529.55 points on 11 dives. Freshman
Giani Benoit also finished well, placing with 498.60 points.
David Roethlisberger (497.55) and
Jax Juarros (494.05) were right behind in sixth and seventh, respectively.
