EVANSVILLE, Ind.— Ryan Campbell took second in the 1-meter diving event while
Guillaume Guth placed third with a school-record 50-yard freestyle time as they led the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to seven podium finishes on Wednesday evening here at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in the Deaconess Aquatics Center.
The Maverick men racked up six of those finishes and scored 107 points throughout the evening to retain their third place position in the team standings with 139 points, just 13 shy of Drury and 10 fewer than Tampa.
The CMU women received an eighth place finish from Olivia Hanssson in the 1,000 free to begin the night as well as two other second team all-America efforts and are in a tie for ninth place with 53 points despite suffering a disqualification in the 200 medley relay near the end of the evening.
The Maverick men scored 37 points in the diving event as Campbell scored 531.20 points in the evening final after grabbing the last spot in the championship final with a preliminary round score of 446.45 points. In the process, the Delmar, New York native earned his initial First Team CSCAA All-America and third overall honor after competing in the consolation final of both diving events last year.
Meanwhile,
Jax Juarros finished eighth with 456.05 points to claim his first career all-America honor.
David Roethlisberger also placed ninth with 448.40 points in the consolation final after finishing one spot behind Campbell and just outside the top eight in the afternoon preliminaries. Roethlisberger is now a 3-time second team all-American.
Freshman
Giani Benoit also competed in the afternoon, placing 18
th with 367.55 points.
In swimming events, Guth blazed to a time of 19.35 seconds in the 50 free, breaking the Maverick record of 19.46, which had been set by fellow 2024 Olympian
Harry Stacey.
Richard Schmiedefeld also took sixth in 19.76 seconds.
Schmiedefeld then came back to anchor the Mavs' men's 200 medley relay team to a fourth place time of 1:24.70. The German sophomore now has three podium finishes over the last two days and now a 8-time all-American.
His teammates were
Luka Samsonov,
Marcos Otero and
Oskar Sawicki. Samsonov now has four career all-America honors to his credit while Otero has three. Sawicki claimed his first as a Maverick after earning previous honors at Drury and Indianapolis.
Guth picked up his second honor after leading-off the Mavs' third place 800 free relay team on Tuesday night with a 200-yard free school record split of 1:33.46.
Earlier, Hansson turned in a time of 10:05.26 in the 1,000 free to claim her 12th overall and tenth first team all-America accolade of her career. Teammate
Hanna Sasivarevic earned her third, finishing 13
th in 10:12.12 while competing in the morning sections.
Melina Giraudeau then claimed her first career all-America honor with a 13
th place finish in the women's 200 IM. She posted a time of 2:03.73 in the finals after posting a time of 2:03.05 in the morning preliminaries.
Ben Vester then turned in an eighth place time of 1:45.52, just off his career-best preliminary round effort of 1:45.34. He is now a 3-time all-American.
Nine more events will be contested on Thursday, the third of five days of the championships.
