General
- CMU was named as NCAA Award of Excellence winner for the RMAC for the "Where We Become Mavericks" campaign.
- All eight CMU winter sports will be in action this week, marking the first time that has been the case this winter.
- Five out of a possible six are nationally-ranked in their respective coaching organization national polls. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has not yet released any rankings.
- Spring sports are also rapidly approaching, beginning on Feb. 4 (Softball) as the RMAC plans to release its first spring sport preseason polls on Wednesday (Baseball) and Thursday (Softball).
Women's Basketball
- The Mavericks, now 18-1 overall (8-0 RMAC), extended their winning streak to 15 games with a pair of wins last week.
- The Mavs won 70-59 at Western Colorado on Tuesday and then won 74-43 over Westminster on Thursday to begin a 5-game home stand.
- CMU was ranked ninth in last week's WBCA Division II Coaches Poll with another one due out late Tuesday afternoon.
- In Tuesday's win at Western Colorado, Olivia Reed Thyne and Mason Rowland both scored 23 points.
- Reed Thyne then scored 24 points while grabbing 19 rebounds in Thursday's win.
- Rowland also had 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Neither played in the fourth quarter as the Mavs led by 36 points after three quarters and as many as 41 early in the fourth.
- Reed Thyne now has 1,972 career points and is just 28 away from the 2,000 milestone and 30 away from matching the RMAC record of 2,002, set by New Mexico Highlands' Becky Gonzales in 2002.
- Reed Thyne continues to lead the RMAC in scoring (19.8 ppg), rebounding (10.8 ppg) and field goal percentage (.595).
- As a team, the Mavs lead the RMAC and rank amongst the nation's top 10 in several categories including scoring margin (+22.7) and field goal percentage defense (33.1).
- The Mavs will continued a 5-game home stand this week, playing Black Hills State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Chadron State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
- Black Hills State (10-5 overall) is just a game behind the Mavs in the RMAC standings at 7-1. They have won nine straight games.
- Chadron State is 1-12 overall and 1-7 in the RMAC.
Men's Basketball
Women's Wrestling
- The Mavericks, who remained seventh in the latest NWCA NCAA Coaches' Poll, had a very successful weekend.
- The Mavs had two individual champions and 18 placers at Saturday's York Open in York, Nebraska
- They then swept a tri-dual on Sunday, defeating Sioux Falls (37-10) and No. 11 Fort Hays State (24-21).
- Gretchen Donally (145) and Valerie Glenn (160) were the two victorious Mavs in the York Open.
- Donally also went 2-0 during Sunday's tri-dual.
- Kinlee Brandley (103), Adriana Gomez (110), Sophia Cornish (117) and Lorianna Piestewa (124) all went 2-0 on Sunday as well.
- One of Cornish's wins was over eighth-ranked Leanna Landreth of FHSU.
- They have five nationally-ranked wrestlers in Mia Zuniga (3rd, 103 lbs.), Sophia Cornish (10th, 117), Lorianna Piestewa (4th, 124), Gretchen Donally (9th, 145) and Jayleen Sekona (6th, 207), according to the latest rankings that came out on Friday.
- Piestewa was named as last week's RMAC Wrestler of the Week.
- The Mavs, now 9-8 overall and 1-1 in RMAC duals, will take on Adams State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in their lone action of this week.
Men's Wrestling
- The Mavericks, ranked 18th nationally, took on 16th-ranked Adams State in a RMAC dual on Saturday in Alamosa.
- The Grizzlies won five straight and six of the bouts to claim a 23-16 win.
- Ruben Samuelson, named as the RMAC Wrestler of the Week last week, claimed his fourth straight first period pin in just 1:59 to cap the dual, which saw the Mavs win the final three bouts.
- AJ Hague, who dropped down to 133 pounds, Noah O'Dougherty (184) and Gabriel Carranza (197) all won their matches as well.
- CMU is now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in RMAC duals.
- The Mavs will host No. 21 Colorado School of Mines (7-2, 2-1 RMAC) in another RMAC dual at 6 p.m. on Friday.
- The Mavs continue to sit 18th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's NCAA Division II Coaches Rankings, which were last released on Dec. 18. A new set of rankings is due out on Thursday.
- They have three ranked individuals in Alex Castaneda, sixth at 149 pounds, Owen Cline (7th, 157) and Gabriel Carranza (7th, 197).
Indoor Track & Field
- The Mavericks will resume their season after a 7-week hiatus on Saturday at the Big Red Machine Open hosted by Western Colorado in Gunnison.
- They last competed there on Dec. 5-6, which was CMU's only meet of the indoor season thus far.
- Teo Casados set a school-record time of 6.70 seconds as one of six event winners on the 2-day meet.
- Casados and Kendra Ritzmann set NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks.
- Casados leads the RMAC with his altitude-adjusted time of 6.74 while Ritzmann ranks second in the RMAC with her triple jump mark of 11.86 meters (38-11).
