ALAMOSA, Colo.— The 16
th-ranked Adams State University Grizzlies won five straight matches from 141 through 174 pounds before the 18
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won the final three to close the final deficit to a 23-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's wrestling dual on Saturday afternoon in the Grizzlies' Plachy Hall.
The Grizzlies won six matches overall and improved to 6-0 overall and to 2-0 in RMAC duals while the Mavs, won the other four plus an extra match, but fell to 4-2 and 1-1 in RMAC action.
After third-ranked Isaiah Gamez won by pin at 125 pounds for the Grizzlies, CMU's
AJ Hague scored a late takedown and near-fall in the 133-pound match to record a 9-4 decision over John Provencio in that weight class while closing overall dual score to 6-3.
However, the Grizzlies bounced back with decisions at 141, 149 and 157 pounds before recording two more major decision wins to build a 23-3 dual lead.
The Mavs then won the final three matches with
Noah O'Dougherty stopping the Grizzlies' run with a 16-5 major decision win at 184 pounds over Caden Schadwinkel.
Gabriel Carranza, the only one of the three nationally-ranked Mavs to record a win on Saturday, then triumphed 7-2 over Ben Tonnesen at 197 pounds.
Reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Week
Ruben Samuelson then recorded his fourth straight first-period pin at 285 pounds to knock off Jaylen Ignacio in just one minute and 59 seconds.
Prior to the dual, CMU's
Juan Garcia dominated Noah Torres, recording an 11-1 major decision victory in a 149-pound extra match.
The Mavs will look to bounce back on Friday (Jan. 24) hosting #21 Colorado Mines in an RMAC dual at 6 p.m. in Brownson Arena in Grand Junction.
