YORK, Neb. – The No. 7 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team had several members of the program compete in the York College Open on Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon. The Mavericks came away with a total of 18 place winners and two champions.
The tournament was split into two divisions with more experienced or starting lineup wrestlers in the Open Division and freshman and less experienced college wrestlers in the Amateur Division.
Sophomore
Gretchen Donally claimed the top spot on the podium at 145 pounds after earning an injury default victory in the final over unattached wrestler Gray Joyce. Donally earned a pair of pins in her first two bouts of the day including one over McKenna Haltom of Baker University in the semifinal.
Val Glenn earned her championship at 160 pounds over her teammate
Celina Preston by way of injury default. Glenn had an outstanding day as she earned back-to-back technical fall wins in her first two matches before a pin of unattached wrestler Anastasia Hardin in the semifinals.
Preston had a strong showing as the runner-up at 160 pounds. The senior earned matching pins at 2:48 in her first two matches before a barnburner in the semifinal which she won 4-4 by criteria over Kami Senlycki of Grand View.
At 110 pounds,
Adriana Gomez went 1-1 on the day and had a runner-up finish falling to Kylie Robledo of Baker in the final 9-7. Gomez opened with a win over Keana Bush of Grand View 9-7 in the semifinal.
Colorado Mesa had four wrestlers finish among the top-6 at 117 pounds with
Sophia Cornish leading the way with a runner-up finish. Cornish won her first two matches of the day including a 10-0 technical fall win over Sarah Pineda of Missouri Valley in the semifinal. The sophomore fell to Mayangelie Colon of Grand View in the title bout.
Senior
Bella Morales placed third at 117 pounds after going 4-1 on the day. Morales pinned Sarah Pineda of Missouri Valley in the third-place match for her only pin of the afternoon.
Brooke McCurley wrestled up a weight at 131 pounds as opposed to her normal 124 pounds and didn't miss a beat. McCurley was the runner-up at the weight after falling in the final to Bella Ngo of Umpqua CC by technical fall. The sophomore finished the day with a 3-1 record with three pins.
Hania Halverson went 5-1 on the day and finished in third place at 131 pounds. Her only loss was to Bella Ngo of Umpqua in the quarters but followed with four straight wins including three straight by technical fall.
Freshman
Kylee Golz had another strong tournament as she finished third at 124 pounds in the Open Division. Golz fell in the semifinals to Catherin Campbell of Grand View before bouncing back with a tech fall win and a pin of Kylee Slyter of Baker in the third-place match.
Fellow freshman
Delarie Juarez placed third at 138 pounds in the Open Division. She reached the semifinal before falling but rebounded with a tech fall win in the conso semifinals and a pin in the third-place match against Macy Pearson of University of Saint Mary's.
Alissa Perez had a strong showing at 103 pounds in the Amateur Division. Perez went 4-1 on the day to claim third-place including a 10-0 technical fall win over Vanessa Tellez of Friends in the placement match.
Kinlee Brandley (103, Open),
Kimberly Carlin (180, Open), and
Kiera Hersel (110, Amateur) all reached the third-place bout at their respective weight but fell.
Jojo McDaniel (117, Open) and
Miah Weldon (124, Amateur) placed fifth in their respective weight classes while
Rachel Jones (117) and
Alena Bartley (207) each placed sixth in the Open Division.
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow in Hays, Kan. They will have a pair of duals against Fort Hays State and Sioux Falls with most of the Maverick starters slated for action.
