COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
Lorianna Piestewa was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Women's Wrestler of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday.
The returning all-American out of Gallup, New Mexico went a perfect 5-0 at last weekend's NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she helped lead the Mavs to a seventh place team finish.
Her first four matches were at her normal 124-pound weight class. She then moved up to 131 pounds to record her fifth win of the weekend.
Two of her victories were by decision over fellow nationally-ranked wrestlers. She defeated top-ranked Shelby Moore of McKendree on Friday and then defeated fourth-ranked Alyssa Mahan of Presbyterian on Saturday. She also recorded three technical fall victories and out-scored her five opponents by a 55-12 margin.
Piestewa, ranked seventh at 124 pounds in the latest (Dec. 19) NWCA NCAA Rankings, is 15-4 this season and 32-6 in her Maverick career.
CMU also claimed the RMAC Men's Wrestler of the Week award as Ruben Samuelson claimed the honor on Tuesday.
The Mavs, ranked seventh as a team, will be in action again this weekend, wrestling at the York Open in York, Nebraska on Saturday before heading to Hays, Kansas for a Sunday tri-dual against No. 9 Fort Hays State and Sioux Falls.
