Mavs claim five RMAC Swimming & Diving Major Awards

Thirty-four CMU athletes combine for 100 All-RMAC honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Five Colorado Mesa University athletes received the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's major awards for the recently completed 2024-25 Swimming & Diving Season.

The Maverick men swept the three awards as team captain Andrew Scoggin was named as the RMAC Men's Swimmer of the Year.  Ryan Campbell was tabbed as the Men's Diver of the Year while Richard Schmeidefeld was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year.  On the women's side, Kenya Meyer was named as the Diver of the Year while Kendyll Wilkinson was picked as the Freshman of the Year.  Simon Fraser's Tori Meklensek received the Women's Swimmer of the Year honor.

All of the awards, including the Coach of the Year plaudits, were voted on by the league's six men's and nine women's head coaches, who could not vote for themselves or their own athletes.

Additionally, 34 different Maverick athletes earned a combined 100 All-RMAC honors, which were determined solely based on the results from last month's RMAC Championships but officially announced in conjunction with Thursday's post-season major awards releases.

The Maverick men had 15 individuals receive 45 total All-RMAC honors to lead the league.

The Maverick women did event better as 19 individuals combined for 55 honors.

The honorees are broken down in the RMAC's releases, linked above.  CMU's honorees are also listed at the end of this article.

The top two individual finishers and members of the first and second place relay teams earned first team all-conference recognition while the third and fourth placing finishing individuals and relay team members garner second team accolades.

The Mavericks swept the RMAC team titles for the seventh straight year in February and then went on to finish third (women's) and ninth (men's) at last week's NCAA Division II Championships in Indianapolis, which were the highest finishes for any RMAC school.

At the conference level, the Mavericks won 27 of the 42 total events, while winning all 20 relay heats and all four diving events for the second straight year.

Scoggin, a Greeley, Colorado native, won four events at the RMAC Championships and followed that by claiming All-American honors in six events at the national championships. The multi-event swimmer finished fifth in the 100-meter backstroke and eighth in the 200-meter backstroke in Indianapolis, earning First Team All-America honors in both events. Scoggin also was a part of the Mavericks 200 freestyle, 200 medley, and 400 medley relay teams that each finished in the Top 12 and earned Second Team All-America honors. In the RMAC Championship, he won the 100 backstroke event and was part of CMU's conference championship 200 freestyle, 200 medley, and 400 medley relay teams.

The senior finished his career as an 11-time all-American and 8-time RMAC Champion.

Campbell, who hails from Delmar, New York, was an RMAC Co-Diver of the Meet at the conference championship and then earned Second Team All-America honors at the NCAA Division II Championships. In the RMAC Championship, he won the 3-meter title and finished third in the 1-meter event. Campbell then finished 11th in the 3-meter event and 12th in the 1-meter event in Indianapolis.

Schmiedefeld, a Stuttgart, Germany product, won four events at the RMAC Championships and then claimed five All-American honors at the national championships. At the RMAC Championships, he won the 50 freestyle title and helped Colorado Mesa win the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relays. Schmiedefeld also finished fourth in the 200 backstroke and seventh in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle at the conference meet.

In Indianapolis, he was a member of the Maverick's eighth-place 800 freestyle unit, which earned first-team honors. He earned second-team honors in the 200 backstroke and as part of the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Meyer, a junior from Bozeman, Montana picked up two of those as she swept the RMAC titles in both diving events, setting a championship record of 541.70 points on the 3-meter.  She was also named as the RMAC Championship Diver of the Meet.  At the national level, she claimed First Team All-American honors after taking seventh in the 3-meter event at the national championships.  She also took 17th in the 1-meter event.

Wilkinson, a Grand Junction, Colorado native, won four medals at the RMAC Championships and earned two more at the NCAA Division II Championships last weekend. At the RMAC Championships, she was a member of the Mavericks' 200 and 800 freestyle winning teams, finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. Wilkinson then was part of Colorado Mesa's 400 freestyle relay team that finished with the silver medal in Indianapolis and the third-place 800 freestyle relay unit. Individually, she placed 16th in the 200 freestyle, earning Second Team All-America honors.
