INDIANAPOLIS— In what was their best preliminary session of the meet so far, the Colorado Mesa University Maverick swimming & diving team qualified five athletes for the championship finals and nine others for the consolation finals and will be represented in ten of 11 Friday evening events at the NCAA Division II Championships here at the IU Natatorium.
Here's a breakdown of the preliminary round action from Friday.
The finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. Mountain) and all of the action is streamed on NCAA.com.
500 Free
The Mavs got off to a good start, qualifying three out of their six swimmers for the evening session in the women's half of the event.
Swedish junior
Olivia Hansson led the way, taking second in her heat and fourth overall amongst the 45 preliminary round swimmers with a time of 4:50.26 to easily reach the championship final for the second straight year. She placed fifth in 2024 and won the consolation final to place ninth as a freshman in 2023.
Seniors
Katerina Matoskova and
Sophia Bains also reached the consolation finals as Matoskova turned in a time of 4:53.29 to take tenth while
Sophia Bains finished 15
th in 4:56.77. Bains was not seeded to reach the finals, coming into the meet ranked 20
th in the event. Matoskova was ranked ninth while Hansson was third.
Meanwhile, sophomore
Hanna Sasivarevic finished 22
nd in 4;57.95 while
Sydnee O'Neil placed 31
st in 4:59.29.
Haven Hinkle rounded out the Mavs' efforts, placing 39
th in 5:01.50.
Senior
Jacob Troescher also grabbed a spot in the men's consolation final, after placing 16
th in the preliminary round with a time of 4:27.12. He was seeded 17th coming into the meet but moved up a critical spot to earn another swim in the top-16.
Four other Maverick men competed.
Gavyn Tatge took 22
nd in 4:28.77 while
Gavin Anderson was 28
th in 4:30.92. Anderson was ranked 30
th on the pre-meet psych sheets. Freshman
Ben Vester placed 34
th in 4:32.99, just off his seed time of 4:32.50 while
Braden Felio took 38
th, touching in 4:35.23.
100 Back
After breaking her own national record in the 100 Back on the Mavs' title-winning 400 Medley Relay team on Thursday night,
Agata Naskret cruised to a time of 52.97 seconds to earn the top seed in Friday's final. Bryn Greenwaldt of Augustana and Luna Mertins of Lynn were right behind with times of 53.05 and 53.06 in other heats and will be on either side of Naskret in the final.
Meanwhile, Maverick freshman
Taylar Hooton swam next to Naskret in the final morning heat and posted a preliminary round time of 54.53 seconds to qualify seventh for the championship final. Hooton was also seeded seventh coming in.
Matoskova also claimed a second spot in Friday's consolation finals, placing 13
th in a season-best 55.00 seconds, 0.46 seconds quicker than her seed time.
Andrew Scoggin also qualified for the championship final in the men's half of the discipline, posting a time of 46.68 seconds to win his preliminary round heat while qualifying fourth overall.
Teammate
Luka Samsonov also qualified for the consolation final in 16
th place with a career-best time of 47.94, four full tenths of a second under his former best of 48.34. He also moved up a spot to fifth in program history after coming in just 24
th on the pre-meet pscyh sheets.
Kuba Kiszczak will be the second alternate after placing 18
th in the preliminary round with a season-best time of 48.03 seconds. He had a seed time of 48.39 coming into the meet and shaved 0.36 seconds off his former-season best.
100 Breast
Antonia Leese, who helped the Mavs win the 400 Medley Relay on Thursday night, also grabbed a spot in the consolation final, qualifying 16
th in 1:02.52. She was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion.
Teammate
Maddi Moran finished 35
th in 1:04.95.
On the men's side, school-record holder
Forrest Frazier tied for 14
th in the preliminary round. He touched in 53.61 and earned a lane in the consolation final.
Teammates
Max Ayres (54.23) and
Marcos Otero (54.28) finished 23
rd and 24
th, respectively, as Otero shaved nearly a half-second off his former career-best of 54.71 while moving up two spots to fifth on the Mavs' all-time performers list.
Mauricio Posadas also had an improvement on his season-best, placing 27
th in 54.89 seconds after coming in with a time of 54.98. Freshmen
Brodie Khajuria finished 28
th in his NCAA Championship debut with a time of 56.00 seconds while Vester took 29
th in 57.62.
200 Butterfly
O'Neil came back from her 500 free effort to place 15
th in the preliminary round with a career-best time of 2:02.74. She was seeded 26
th on the pre-meet psych sheet with her former career-best of 2:03.08 but improved by 11 spots to claim a lane in the consolation final while moving up two spots to fourth in program history.
The Mavs also had three other swimmers in the event as
Tori Bartusiak took 22
nd in 2:04.43 while
Kiara Borchardt finished 25
th in 2:05.11.
Amber Siverts rounded out the Mavs' efforts, placing 27th in 2:05.92.
Dejan Urbanek was the lone Maverick man in the event. He placed 19
th in 1:48.27.
3m Diving
Kenya Meyer scored 451.10 points on 11 dives to qualify for the evening finals in fifth place.
Talia Datilio will be in the consolation finals, beginning in a matter of minutes at around 1:15 p.m. MDT. SHe scored 418.80 points to place 12th in the preliminary round.
Mimi Licht, an all-American on the 1-meter board on Wednesday, just missed out on the opportunity for a second award, placing 17th with 393.15 points.
200 Free Relay
The Maverick women will look to defend their national title from a year ago and will swim in the last of three sections in the final event of Friday evening's session. They are seeded fourth.
The Maverick men will also be in the top section of the men's half of the event and are seeded seventh.
