Mavs to host Saturday Last Chance Meet

CMU swimmers and divers hope to claim extra NCAA Championship spots

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— A week after sweeping the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship titles, the Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will look for some extra qualifications in to the NCAA Division II Championships through Saturday's CMU Last Chance Meet.

Diving events will begin at 8 a.m. with the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter events, running concurrently.  The divers will then switch boards for 9 a.m. competition in the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.

All four of those events will be contested in a 6-dive format.

Swimming preliminaries will then begin at 10 a.m. before action will run into another mini finals session.  Swimmers will also be permitted a third chance at hitting an NCAA qualifying time in time trials if they so choose or need.

Action is slated to end by Noon.

Live results can be found at the link above.

The meet will not be streamed.

Admission to the El Pomar Natatorium is free.

The Competition

The Mavericks will be joined by three swimmers from the Colorado School of Mines, two from Western Colorado and seven from national power UIndy, which is making the trip to Colorado in order to try to take advantage of the available altitude-adjustments.

The Mavs have by far the largest contingent of athletes with 24 individual swimmers plus 13 divers and a women's relay team attempting to set NCAA qualifying marks and/or tune-up for next month's national meet in Evansville, Indiana.

Diving Tune-Up

Saturday morning's diving events will primarily be a national championship tune-up opportunity for the Mavericks, who already have qualified six men and six women for the NCAA Division II Pre-Championship Qualification Meet on Mar. 10.

The Maverick dozen have set at least two championship qualification scores in two different meets.

That list of women's qualifiers includes Talia Datilio, Jenna Hurley, Juli Holt, Emma Lence, Mimi Licht and Kenya Meyer.  The men's qualification list includes Giani Benoit, Ryan Campbell, Aiden Coon, Jax Juarros, Ty Mitton and David Roethlisberger.

Asa Keim, who has also been competing for the Maverick indoor track & field team this winter, will also compete and will be gunning for an additional NCAA qualification score from a second meet.

Notably, Jax Juarros also plans to compete on Saturday morning after sitting out of previous meets in January and February, including last week's RMAC Championships due to injury.

Maverick Swimming Entries

Here is a list of the Mavericks' entries for Saturday's swimming meets, along with their season-best and altitude-adjusted times to date.  Those that have already hit the NCAA "B" cut standard are also listed with their current rank (as of Friday) on the NCAA Top Times Report.

Although every year is slightly different, last year's NCAA invitation cutoff was between 19th and 21st on men's events and between 26th and 27th on the women's side.

There are also other last chance and conference championship meets this weekend so the current ranks are bound to change.

The Maverick women's 200 free relay team is already assured of national qualification but will look to improve their time to ensure a spot in the fastest section at the NCAA meet.
