SALT LAKE CITY— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks claimed two relay victories, two "skins" wins and a diving victory in Friday afternoon men's & women's swimming duals at and against NCAA Division I Utah in the Ute Natatorium.
The Mavericks capped the meet by winning both 400-yard freestyle relays after
Kuba Kiszczak (100 IM) and
Andrew Scoggin (100 Back) claimed skins in a series of elimination-style heats that saw the eventual winners race in their respective events three times.
Meanwhile,
Wyatt Hermanson led the Maverick divers, claiming the men's 1-meter competition with another NCAA Division II Championship qualifying score of 287.03 points while taking second on the 3-meter board with 273.00 points.
Hermanson's runner-up finish was one of ten the Mavericks recorded in total throughout the duals, which Utah won by 240-156 (men's) and 261-137 (women's) margins.
The uniquely formatted duals featured competition in 13 events for each gender, including all five relays.
Three of those relays were contested at the beginning of the dual, which was pushed back an hour after the Mavericks encountered some road closures on the way.
The Utes won all six of those races to open big leads although the Maverick women managed second place finishes in both the 200 and 800 Free relays with
Elli Williams,
Reagan Horn,
Tori Bartusiak and
Ada Qunell combining for a 200 time of 1:38.38 after
Olivia Hansson, Qunell,
Katerina Matoskova and
Kendyll Wilkinson posted an 800 time of 7:51.16.
Hansson then came back to finish third in the rarely-contested 800 free, the first individual event of the dual, with a time of 8:33.24.
Jacob Troescher then finished third in the men's 800 free with a time of 7:46.57. Team points were also awarded to the top three swimmers at the half-way point (400) of that event.
Action then returned to the relays as the Maverick men then managed a second-place time of 3:24.44 in the 400 medley relay with Scoggin,
Forrest Frazier,
Dejan Urbanek and
Harry Stacey on duty for CMU's "A" squad.
Swimming action then continued in the 400 IM, contested in a standard fashion that saw
Sophia Bains take third for CMU's women in 4:41.50 before
Ben Vester did the same for the men, touching in 4:12.31.
The 100 IM, 100 Fly, 100 Back and 100 Breast events were then contested in the series of skins races that saw six swimmers contest the preliminary round. The top four then advanced to the semifinals before two— including one from each team— contested the final rounds in exciting head-to-head action.
Kiszczak finished third in the first two races of the 100 IM before coming back to take the final in 51.71 seconds, his fastest time of the three rounds.
Scoggin then won the 100 Back in 49.21 seconds after taking second in the preliminary round and third in the semifinals.
Elsewhere,
Kate Speerschneider was the Mavs' top performer in the women's 100 IM, finishing second in the final with a time of 1:00.50.
Amber Siverts also took second in the 100 Fly with a finals time of 58.45 seconds, her best of the three heats.
Matoskova was the Mavs' representative in the women's 100 Back final and touched second in 58.60 seconds after winning both the preliminary (59.80) and semifinal rounds (58.58).
Maddi Moran, competing in her hometown, led the CMU women in the 100 Breast, setting her best time of the day (1:06.34) in the semifinals.
In other men's skins races, Urbanek took second in the 100 Fly with a final round time of 49.60 seconds while
Mauricio Posadas accomplished the same in the 100 Breast with a time of 58.06 seconds.
The women's 400 free relay squad of Wilkinson, Hansson, Williams and Qunell then won the final women's race of the afternoon by more than six seconds in 3:33.28 before Stacey, Kiszczak,
Marcos Otero and
Jameson McEnaney dominated the men's final in 3:04.67 to win by more than five seconds.
In diving action,
Talia Datilio led the Maverick women on the 1-meter with a third place score of 229.73 points while
Kenya Meyer took third on the 3-meter with 235.80 points on six dives.
David Roethlisberger finished third overall on both diving boards in support of Hermanson on the men's side. Roethlisberger scored 224.78 points on the 1-meter and scored 244.43 on the taller board.
The Mavericks will continue their season in two weeks competing against host Air Force and BYU in the Cadet Natatorium on Jan. 24-25. The Maverick divers are also scheduled to compete at the following week's Air Force Diving Invitaitonal before CMU will turn its attention to hosting the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships from Feb. 11-15.
