GENEVA, Ohio— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks set two new school-records and advanced eight athletes to the championship finals and three others to the consolation heats during Friday's preliminary session on Day 4 of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, certainly their best preliminary session of the week thus far.
The Mavericks will also have the No. 1 seed in both the men's and women's 100-yard backstroke as
Ben Sampson will go for his third national title in as many nights after
Agata Naskret, who broke her own-school-record, and
Lauren White finished as the first and third qualifiers in the women's portion of the event.
The Mavs' success started early as
Olivia Hansson posted a time of four minutes, 53.06 seconds in the women's 500 freestyle, qualifying sixth overall.
Teammates
Katerina Matoskova (4:58.91) and
Sophia Bains (5:00.59) finished 26
th and 34
th, respectively.
However, Matoskova came back later in the session to reach the consolation final in the 100 back, placing 16
th in the preliminary round with a time of 55.22 seconds.
Meanwhile, Naskret set her new program record time of 52.80 seconds, going well under her former record of 52.92, set en-route to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title last month. White also swam well, finishing in 54.06 seconds, just off her season-best altitude-adjusted time of 54.06.
Sampson was also just off his season-best time in the men's 100 back, earning the top seed for the finals in 45.88 seconds. He has won the 200 and 400-yard individual medley titles on the past two nights.
Teammates
Andrew Scoggin and
Kuba Kiszczak were also able to earn a lane in the consolation final. Scoggin finished the prelims in 47.43, just off his personal-best of 47.38, to take tenth in the preliminaries while Kiszczak turned in a career-best time of 47.87 second to qualify 15
th.
The Mavs continued to roll as
Maddi Moran qualified seventh in the women's 100 breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:02.00. She, Naskret,
Kiara Borchardt and
Ada Qunell won the national title in the 400 medley relay on Thursday night.
Benedict Nagy, the women's 200 and 400 individual medley national champion, also reached her third final in as many nights, qualifying third in the 200 butterfly while smashing her own CMU record of 2:00.19 with a time of 1:58.63.
Meanwhile,
Dejan Urbanek qualified eighth in the men's 200 fly with a time of 1:46.52 to earn his way into the championship final.
Isaiah Cheeks also qualified for what will be his last championship final, placing third in the men's 3-meter diving preliminaries with a 561.20 points over 11 dives. He is already a 7-time all-American and will close out his illustrious career while trying to win a second NCAA title in three years.
Fellow Maverick diver
David Roethlisberger finished 18
th with a score of 409.20 points.
In other Friday morning action,
Jacob Troescher finished 29
th in the men's 500 free prelims with a time of 4:31.63 while
Gavin Anderson took 35
th at 4:33.25.
Aziz Ghaffari, coming off a fourth place finish in the 200 free on Thursday night, was 40
th in 4:36.41.
Max Ayres, who earned his first two all-America honors on the Mavs' 200 and 400 medley relay teams over the last two nights, set a new career-best time of 53.98 seconds in the 100 breaststroke. He took 17
th and will be the first alternate for Friday night's finals. Fellow freshman
Marcos Otero also set a new career-best time of 55.16 seconds to finish 26
th. They now rank second and sixth in program history for the event.
Elsewhere, Borchardt finished 23
rd in the women's 200 fly prelims at 2:04.47, finishing just ahead of freshman teammate
Sydnee O'Neil, who placed 24
th in 2:04.55.
The Mavericks will also field teams in the 200 free relays, which will close out the Friday night action. The session begins at 5:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. Mountain).
