LAS VEGAS— Benedict Nagy,
Ben Sampson and the women's 400-yard medley relay team all claimed event wins as the Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams both sit in third place after Sunday's portion of the UNLV Invitational.
Nagy and Sampson, the NCAA Division II leaders in the 200-yard individual medleys swept those wins before Nagy combined with
Agata Naskret,
Kiara Borchardt and
Ada Qunell to win the relay as the Maverick women scored 202 team points through six events.
CMU's men scored 221.
The host Rebels lead the way in both sets of team standings with 358 ½ women's points and 340 points on the men's side. Hawai'i is second. with 277 ½ women's points and 238 men's points.
The Mavs are the only Division II squad in the field, which also includes Division I squads Arizona, Cal Baptist, New Mexico, Pacific and Seattle.
The Mavericks got the day off to a solid start qualifying seven swimmers (4 women, 3 men) for the championship finals in the morning swimming diving preliminary sessions. They also had nine (6 men, 3 women) other consolation final qualifiers in the six (3 men's, 3 women's) individual swimming events that were contested throughout the day.
All six Maverick divers in action also contributed to the team scoring haul.
Women's Swimming
In the first event of the evening, the Mav women's top quartet of Naskret, Qunell,
Elli Williams and
Lauren White finished third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.03. The "B" squad of
Tori Bartusiak,
Izzy Powers, Borchardt and
Anna Beck also fared well, taking sixth in 1:35.06.
Katerina Matoskova then finished eighth in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.58 after posting a preliminary round time of 4:59.87.
Sydnee O'Neil also turned in a season-best and NCAA Division II Championship "B" cut time of 5:02.91 in the "C" bonus final to finish 18
th.
Nagy then won the 200 IM in 2:00.84 while teammate Sophia Baines also reached the "A" final, finishing sixth in 2:05.01 after posting a slightly quicker time of 2:04.73 in the prelims. Bartusiak also scored, placing 15
th in 2:07.04 after turning in a time of 2:06.99 in the morning.
Nagy's time is the third quickest in Division II this year, just shy of her altitude-adjusted division-leading 1:59.65 set last month at the CMU/TYR Invitational.
The Mavs also had three scorers in the 50 free as Qunell posted times of 23.70 in both rounds to finish seventh while
Lauren White finished third in the consolation final and 11
th overall in 23.69. Williams was also in that section and placed 13
th overall in 23.79.
Meanwhile, Powers won the "C" final in an improved NCAA "B" cut time of 23.71. Naskret (23.73) and Borchardt (24.17) also placed second in the "C" and "D" finals, respectively.
The women's 400 medley relay team then out-touched the Rebels in 3:40.68 to win the final swimming event of the night while the "B" squad of White,
Juliette Benson, Beck and Powers took sixth in 3:48.14.
Men's Swimming
The Maverick men took third in the 200 free relay to begin the night as
Jameson McEnaney, Sampson,
Andrew Scoggin and
Austin Patterson combined for a time of 1:19.53. The "B" team of
Aziz Ghaffari,
Max Ayres,
Xander Zappas and
Marcos Otero took ninth in 1:22.63.
Gavyn Tatge then took eighth in the 500 free final, touching in 4:36.40 after earning a lane in the top heat with a time of 4:31.85 in the morning.
Jacob Troescher (4:31.22), Ghaffari (4:32.70) and
Gavin Anderson (4:32.81) also scored well in the "B" final, placing second, third and fourth in that heat and 10
th-12
th overall.
After setting a U.S. Olympic Trial Cut time in the long course meter version of the event during a Saturday time trial, Sampson then dominated the short course yard discipline on Sunday, winning in 1:43.51 to win by 2.39 seconds.
Teammate
John Walgast also set an improved NCAA "B" cut time of 1:49.37 to win the consolation final and move into the No. 9 spot of Maverick history.
Meanwhile,
Mauricio Posadas placed 13
th, finishing the "B" final in 1:52.24 after earning a lane with a 1:50.76 preliminary round time.
McEnaney then matched his relay lead-off split, turning in a fourth place time of 20.43 seconds in the 50 free, an NCAA "B" cut time that moved the freshman into ninth in program history.
Scoggin and Patterson also scored taking 15
th and 16
th with consolation final times of 20.81 and 20.92 seconds, somewhat off their 20.74 and 20.85 preliminary round marks.
Sampson, Posadas, Zappas and McEnaney then placed fourth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:14.49 while teammates Scoggin, Ayres, Walgast and Ghaffari placed fifth in 3:16.85.
Diving
Isaiah Cheeks led the Maverick divers placing seventh on the men's 3-meter with a 6-dive score of 279.80 points.
Jax Juarros finished ninth with 273.55 while Ty MItton took tenth with 272.45 points.
David Roethlisberger also finished 12
th with 274.00 points in the finals after scoring 255.85 in the preliminary session.
Meanwhile,
Jenna Hurley finished 11
th in the women's 1-meter competition with 212.30 points.
Kenya Meyer was 13
th with 207.25 points.

The meet will continue through Tuesday.
Monday's action will include preliminary heats in the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back during the morning, starting at 9:30 a.m. PST (10:30 a.m. Mountain). Those events plus the 200 medley and 800 free relays will then be contested during the finals session, slated for a 5 p.m. PST (6 p.m. Mountain) start. The men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter diving events will also be contested on Monday after the respective swimming sessions.
