Mavs dominate Mines to extend RMAC winning streaks

Naskret, Sampson break CSM Natatorium 100 back records

GOLDEN, Colo.— The second and third-ranked Colorado Mesa University swimming teams combined to post the fastest time in 19 of 22 combined events as the Maverick men and women both extended long Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual-meet winning streaks in dominating fashion over in-state rival Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon here in the CSM Natatorium.

The second-ranked Maverick women, now 4-1 (2-0 RMAC) in duals this season, claimed nine official event wins and exhibitioned all of their swimmers in the final two events while easily extending a nearly 8-year old conference winning streak to 34 with a 121-79 victory over the nation's 22nd-ranked Orediggers, who fell to 2-1.

Meanwhile, the CMU men posted a 113-89 win after claiming six official wins while also choosing to exhibition the final two events, allowing the Orediggers to close the final team score margins.

Diving was not contested in Saturday's dual.

The CMU men (2-2, 1-0 RMAC), ranked third in the first monthly edition of the CSCAA NCAA Division II Top 25 Dual Meet Poll, have now won 13 consecutive RMAC duals since the start of the 2016-17 campaign.  Eleven of those wins have come over the Orediggers, who are now 1-1 on the young dual-meet season.

CMU's men have now won 17 straight duals against the Orediggers while the women have claimed 13 straight dual decisions in the rivalry.

Individually, the Mavericks also set three new CSM Natatorium records as Ben Sampson broke the 100-yard backstroke mark as part of the Mavs' meet-starting 400 medley relay.  Meanwhile, Agata Naskret broke the women's 100 back record twice over, doing so in the medley relay and again en-route to 100 back victory while Benedict Nagy broke the women's 200 IM pool record.

Sampson won all three of his official events and competed in five others as an exhibition swimmer during a busy and productive day while Olivia Hansson won all three of her events to lead the CMU women, who also had double wins from three others in Ada Qunell, Naskret and Kiara Borchardt.

Naskret, Maddi Moran, Borchardt and Qunell started the day off with a winning 400 medley relay time of 3:52.69 as Naskret turned in a time of 56.82 as lead-off.

Hansson then took the 1000 free in 10:38.28 before coming back to win the 200 free in 1:55.89.

Elli Williams continued the Mavs' winning ways, taking the 50 free in 24.48 seconds before Nagy set the 200 IM record in 2:08.70 as the Mavs had the four fastest times with Qunell (2:10.06), Katerina Matoskova (2:11.40) out-pacing Sophia Bains as exhibition swimmers.  Bains finished second officially in 2:11.96.  Nagy broke the former record of 2:09.54, set by Colorado State's Erin Dawson just over a year ago on Oct. 15, 2022.

Borchardt then won the 100 fly discipline in 58.05 seconds to edge freshman teammate Amber Siverts, who finished second in 58.10.

Qunell (52.57) and Matoskova (54.71) then went 1-2 in the 100 free before Naskret re-broke the pool record in the 100 back with a time of 56.46 seconds.

Former Maverick great Mary Saiz held the former pool record of 57.26, set in 2016-17.

The Mavs went 1-2-3 in that event as Division I transfer (Utah) Kate Leary placed second in 59.66 while Lauren White was third in 59.86 in a return to her hometown.

Hansson then completed the freestyle sweep, taking the 500 in 5:11.84 while Bains was second in 5:19.84.

Moran then touched first in the 100 breast in 1:05.35 as an exhibition swimmer before Qunell, Williams, Borchardt and White closed out the women's portion of the meet in the 200 free with a race-winning time of 1:37.57.

Sampson won the 400 medley relay, 50 free and 200 IM.  He, Mauricio Posadas, Dejan Urbanek and Aziz Ghaffari won the relay in 3:22.82, nearly four seconds faster than the Mavs' "B" team, which in turn finished 1.43 seconds ahead of the Mines "A" squad.

Sampson had a split of 48.93 seconds, taking Mines' Jerry Birnbaum's former pool record of 50.63 off the board by 1.7 full seconds.

Minutes later, Jacob Troescher then won the 1000 free in 9:49.67 before freshman Jameson McEnaney won the 200 free in 1:42.99, leading a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep.  Jackson Moe (1:44.12) and Jeremy Koch (1:45.91) were also a part of that event sweep, which gave CMU 15 quick points in that event alone.

Sampson then won the 50 free in 21.22 seconds while Urbanek finished in 21.56 as an exhibition swimmer.  Andrew Scoggin placed second in 21.63 while Max Ayres finished off a second consecutive CMU 1-2-3 sweep in 21.70.

Sampson was again victorious in the 200 IM, winning that event in 1:54.72 before Urbanek led yet another CMU sweep in the 100 fly.  Urbanek touched in 50.61 while Xander Zappas was second in 51.52.  Austin Patterson was credited with a third place finish in 52.34 while Sampson had finished in 51.94 as a non-scoring swimmer.

The Orediggers then picked up their first event win in the men's 100 free through Jakson Winn (46.66) although Ghaffari (47.18), McEnaney (47.27) and Moe (47.50) went 2-3-4 ahead of Sampson (47.70) and Ayres (47.72), who both exhibitioned the event.

Andrew Scoggin then led the Mavs in the 100 back with a second place time of 50.30 before Troescher placed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:47.24.

Posadas (58.57) and Sampson (58.96) then had the fastest two times in the 100 breast before the Mavs also exhibitioned all three of their 200 free relay teams.  McEnaney, Patterson, Holden Convertino and Ayres won the actual race in 1:23.89.

The rest of CMU's 2023-24 dual schedule will come against Division I competition, including in 13 days when the Mavs head to Laramie, Wyoming to face the Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Mavs and Orediggers will then both compete in the CMU/TYR Invitational beginning on Nov. 15.
