Five-peat Sweep

Sampson leads Maverick men to another record-setting night at the A3 Performance Invite

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Led by two more meet and two more pool record performances, the Colorado Mesa University men's swimming and diving team completed a week-long event-winning sweep to claim their fifth straight and tenth A3 Performance Invitational title in dominating fashion here at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The nation's sixth-ranked Mavericks won all six scoring and seven total events on Saturday, the fourth and final day of the meet, posting a comfortable 495-point win over second place Colorado School of Mines, ranked 19th in the latest CSCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll.  The Mavs, who won all 22 events throughout the meet, scored 1,607 ½ team points, the second highest point total in the now 11-year meet history.  Mines tallied 1,112 ½ while the CMU Club team also competed, finishing third with 197.

The Maverick women also shared the title with NCAA Division I Northern Arizona, as each team scored 1,168 team points to end up tied at the end of 6-team women's meet.

Ben Sampson, named as the Male Swimmer of the Meet, again led the way as he smashed the meet, pool and Maverick record in the 200-yard backstroke, a night after becoming the fastest American and sixth fasted Division II swimmer of all-time in the 100 back on Friday.    In Saturday's 200-yard final, he led a 1-2-3-4 Maverick sweep, their second in as many events, with a time of one minute, 43.91 seconds, well under the NCAA Division II Championship automatic qualifying standard and nearly four seconds faster than the former Maverick standard of 1:47.75 (1:46.55-altitude adjusted), which had been held by former Maverick great and assistant coach Justin Hastings.

Sampson, who won two individual and six overall events, while setting meet records in seven, also took a large 2.78-second lead on this year's NCAA Division II National Performance list lead as the only automatic qualifier this far.

Freshman Andrew Scoggin, redshirt junior Lane Austin and freshman Jeremy Koch all set NCAA "B" cut times as well.  Scoggin touched in 1:48.61 to take over the No. 5 spot in program history and move to as high as No. 9 in the nation this year while Austin was just behind in 1:48.97, after going into the finals as the top qualifier with a preliminary round time of 1:48.36. He now ranks fourth in program history and is eighth in the country this year.

Koch finished in 1:49.35 and will now rank seventh in program-history

Sampson then led-off the Mavericks' meet record-setting 400 free relay team, that finished in a NCAA qualifying time of 2:59.17, good for fifth in Division II this season.  Matheus Laperriere, the 100 free winner, Felipe D'Orsi and Austin were also on that squad while the "B" team, that featured 200 breast winner Matt Barrett, Kuba Kiszczak, Mado Elkady and George Durin touched second less than a second later in 3:00.12.

Barret (45.41) and Sampson (45.44) also set NCAA provisional qualifying lead-off splits for the 100 free.

Earlier, Dejan Urbanek set a meet record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:47.33, which converts his time to 1:46.13, third fastest in Division II this year.  He moved up a spot to second in program history with the mark, one of the Mavs' 17 NCAA qualifying times on the day.

Jake Simmons also had such a time, taking second in 1:50.29 to move into the No. 5 spot in program history.  Tucker Adams, who ranks fourth, was fifth in 1:52.41, while Zach Hartman finished seventh after going into the finals as the top qualifier with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.03, which ranks third in program history.

Elsewhere, the Mavericks went 1-4 in the evening-starting 1,650 freestyle. Redshirt freshman Gavin Anderson won his second event of the meet in 16:05.02 to take over the fourth spot on the national performance list and fourth position in Maverick history with the 20-second altitude adjustment.  True freshman Jacob Troescher also set a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:17.05 while Stef Teutsch (16:21.39) and Austin Mondello (16:34.08), seeded ninth, rounded out the 1-4 sweep.

In the 100 free, the Mavericks had four of the top five finishers, all of whom set NCAA "B" cut times.  Laperriere took the win in 44.80 seconds to move into the No. 2 spot of CMU history behind only Sampson.  Elkady was second in 45 seconds flat to move into the No. 7 spot on program history.

Mines' Harry Smith, who set the meet record of 44.65 in the morning prelims, took third in 45.05 seconds while D'Orsi, who turned in a preliminary heat time of 44.87 to move into the No. 4 spot in CMU history, finished fourth in the final, touching in 45.08 seconds.  Kiszczak also matched his season-best and NCAA "B" cut time of 45.40 to place fifth.

In the 200 breast, Barrett won in an NCAA qualifying time of 2:01.23 to lead a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep.  2-time defending meet champion Mahmoud Elgayar, the school-record holder, was second in 2:02.70 while freshman Noah Maestas finished third in 2:03.57 to jump to the No. 6 spot in CMU history.

During the afternoon, Tanner Belliston set yet another NCAA Division II pre-championship qualifying meet score of 496.50 points over 11 dives on the 3-meter.  That event was an exhibition and was not figured into the team scoring but was his third win as many days.
