Mavs set for final regular season tune-up against strong field

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nationally-ranked Colorado Mesa University men's golf team will look to bounce back from their lowest placing of the year and wrap up the regular season on a high note when they play in Monday and Tuesday's Palm Valley Classic, hosted by the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association, at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
 
The Mavs are one of 20 teams in the field,12 of which are ranked inside the in the top 50 of the SCOREBOARD Powered by clippd national computerized rankings.
 
The 54-hole tournament will feature two rounds on Monday and another on Tuesday morning.

Shotgun starts are slated for 7:30 a.m. Arizona Time (8:30 a.m. Mountain) each day.

Last Time Out
 
The Mavericks finished in a tie for tenth place out of 18 teams at the Sam Proal Invite in Pueblo this past Monday and Tuesday.
 
The Mavs posted team scores of 291, 296 and 295 and finished at 882 (+30).
 
Baptiste Laborde was the top Maverick, finishing in a tie for 16th place with a 54-hole total of 214 (+1) while playing as an individual.  He had a steady tournament featuring even par rounds of 71 on both mornings along with a 1-over par 72 in Monday's afternoon round.
 
Leo Lavalle was the top Maverick in the top scoring lineup and tied for 28th at 218 (+5).  He fired an even par round of 71 to close out the tournament after finishing Monday's two rounds at 74 and 73.

Maverick Head Coach Scott Sullivan's lineup for this week's tournament includes Leo Lavalle, Dylan Everett, Timmy Cavarno, Jacob Gonzalez and Henry Starr with Luke Wagstaff playing as an individual.
 
Regional No. 1
 
The Mavericks were ranked first in the initial set of NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings, which are the rankings that will eventually determine the teams that will qualify for the regional portion of the NCAA Tournament in May.
 
That ranking was released on Mar. 27 with the next due out this Friday.
 
Ten teams from the region will eventually be selected with the winners of the RMAC and Lone Star Conference Tournaments earning automatic spots.
 
The Mavs were the only RMAC team inside the top five ahead of LSC foes St. Mary's, Dallas Baptist, West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin.  CSU Pueblo and Colorado Christian, who sat sixth and ninth, were the only other two RMAC teams in the top 10.  The Colorado School of Miens was listed 11th.
 
In the polls
 
The Mavericks are ranked 14th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, released on March 27 and prior to their last outing.  The Mavs had been tied for 12th in the previous poll, released on Mar. 6.
 
The Mavs are the highest ranked RMAC team in that poll, sitting ahead of CSU Pueblo, now which is tied 15th after checking in at the No. 16 of the previous poll.   Colorado Christian is receiving votes.
 
Hanging in the top 25
 
The Mavericks did drop seven spots but are still amongst the nation's top 25 at the No. 24 spot in the most recent edition of the SCOREBOARD Powered by clippd NCAA Division II computerized rankings, released on Thursday (Apr. 2)

They had been 17th in the previous rankings.
 
CSU Pueblo, which took second in last week's tournament, is now the highest ranked RMAC squad at No. 13, two spots higher than the previous ranking.    The Mavs are two spots ahead of Colorado Christian, which moved up five spots to 26th after winning last week's tournament.
 
The Colorado School of Mines has also cracked the top 50 in the No. 50 spot.
 
Individually, Leo Lavalle now leads the Mavs in the No. 76 spot of the ranking.  Dylan Everett is now ranked 83rd.
 
Look at the Field
 
Monday and Tuesday's tournament field includes 20 teams, including ten from the South Central Region, nine from the West Region and one from the Central Region in Arkansas-Fort Smith.
 
The Mavs are one of four teams ranked inside the top 25 of the SCOREBOARD Rankings behind No. 13 CSU Pueblo and No. 22 UT Permian Basin and No. 23 Cal State East Bay. 
 
Five other South Central Region squads in No. 26 Colorado Christian, No. 35 Midwestern State, No. 42 UT Tyler, No. 45 Cameron and No. 50 Mines are also inside top 50, which should make for a competitive tournament with major regional ranking implications on the line.
 
No. 37 CSU San Bernardino, No. 38 Simon Fraser and No. 39 Chico State are also ranked amongst the nation's top 50 as representatives from the West Region.
 
Eight of the 11 teams in the official NCAA Division II South Central Rankings will also be in the field.  Five of the 11 teams in the West Region rankings will also tee it up.
 
Three teams inside the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll will play this week with CMU headlining that list ahead of CSU Pueblo and No. 21 Cal Sate East Bay.  Four other teams in UT Permian Basin, CSU San Bernardino, Colorado Christian and Chico State are also in the others receiving votes category of the poll.

The Mavs will turn their attention to the championship portion of the season, playing at the RMAC Championships from Apr. 19-21 in Boulder City, Nevada.
