Last Time Out

The Mavericks had three players finish inside the top ten while taking fourth in the final team standings at the Coyote Classic this past Monday and Tuesday in Beaumont, California.

The Mavericks posted team scores of 283, 290 and 296 in the three rounds to finish with a score of 869, just five shots over par.

Freshman Henry Starr, who was playing as an individual, took second in the field of 80 golfers from 13 teams.  He posted rounds of 68, 69 and 70 and finished at 9-under par 207.

Meanwhile, Maverick veterans Timmy Cavarno and Dylan Everett both tied for tenth at 217 (+1).  Freshman Jacob Gonzalez tied for 16th at 218 (+2) and was tied for the individual lead after posting a 5-under par 67 in opening round on Monday morning before slipping back with an 78 (+6) that afternoon.

Leo Lavalle was tied for 29th at 222 (+6) while Luke Wagstaff was just outside the top half of the field at 227 (+11), good for a 42nd place tie.

Baptiste Laborde also played for the first time this spring, recording a T-63 finish at 234 (+18).  He had a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday.

Lineup Look

Maverick Head Coach Scott Sullivan has entered eight Mavericks for the upcoming tournament, shaking his team line-up slightly.

Following his impressive effort last week, freshman Henry Starr has entered the top five and will play in the Mavs' fourth position behind Leo Lavalle, Dylan Everett and Timmy CavarnoJacob Gonzalez will play in the No. 5 spot.

Luke Wagstaff, Baptiste Laborde and Inigo Badial will play as individuals.  Wagstaff had been part of the scoring five in each of the previous seven tournament this season while Badial will make his third appearance of the campaign.

This will mark the first time that both Maverick freshmen— Gonzalez and Starr— have been in the scoring five in the same tournament.

Weekly Honors

Henry Starr's second place finish and career-best tournament score of 207 this past Monday and Tuesday earned him Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week honors on Thursday.  The freshman out of Englewood, Colorado is the fourth different Maverick to earn what are now five combined awards this season.

No other RMAC program has had more than one award in 2025-26.

Starr's opening round of 68 in California also matched his best of his young Maverick career.

He made 13 birdies and a pair of eagles during the Coyote Classic, including three birdies and an eagle in the opening round.

New Favorite Hole

Maverick senior Timmy Cavarno has found what has to be one of his favorite holes.  He made an eagle on the par-5, 523-yard 16th hole at the Oak Valley Golf Club during all three rounds of the Coyote Classic, helping propel him to the T-10 overall finish.

Cavarno now leads the Mavs with four top ten finishes this season.

In the polls

The Mavericks are now ranked 14th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, released on Friday morning.  The Mavs had been tied for 12th in the previous poll, released on Mar. 6.

The Mavs are the highest ranked RMAC team in that poll, sitting ahead of CSU Pueblo, now tied for 15th after checking in at the No. 16 spot three weeks ago.   Colorado Christian is receiving votes.

The Mavericks also dropped three spots to 15th in this week's SCOREBOARD Powered by clippd NCAA Division II computerized rankings.  They sit just behind No. 13 CSU Pueblo as one of three RMAC squads in the top 50.

Meanwhile, Dylan Everett is now ranked 57th in SCOREBOARD's national individual rankings while Leo Lavalle is 61st.

Look at the Field

The Mavs are one of 16 teams expected to compete in the Sam Proal Invite.

All seven RMAC squads are in the field, which also includes four other NCAA Division II South Central Regional squads out of the Lone Star Conference.  Three West Region teams will also compete while Dodge City and Hutchinson Community Colleges out of Kansas will round out the field as junior college representatives.

The results could be quite tight with the 14th-ranked Mavs, T-15 CSU Pueblo and No. 18 West Texas A&M all sitting in the top 20 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek poll.

CSU Pueblo, CMU and No. 17 West Texas A&M also sit in the top 20 of the SCOREBOARD rankings with Colorado Christian sitting 31st.  The Colorado School of Mines is just outside the top 50 at No. 51.

Up Next

The Mavs will wrap up the regular season with their third straight Monday/Tuesday tournament, competing at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona on Apr. 6-7.
