BEAUMONT, Calif.— Three Colorado Mesa University golfers are inside the top ten of the individual standings while the nation's 12
th-ranked Maverick men are tied for third in the team standings through one day and 36 holes of the Coyote Classic, hosted by CSU San Bernardino here at the Oak Valley Golf Club.
The Mavericks posted team scores of 283 (-5) and 290 (+2) in the first two rounds and are at 573 and three shots under par heading into Tuesday morning's third and final round, slated for a 8 a.m. PDT (9 a.m. Mountain) shotgun start.
The host Coyotes, ranked 45
th nationally, are leading the tournament at 563 (-13) by three shots over Cal State Monterey Bay. The Mavs and No. 38 Chico State are seven shots further back but ten clear of fifth place Stanislaus State (583; +7) and the rest of the 13-team field.
Maverick freshman
Henry Starr, who is playing as an individual, is in second place out of the 80-man field at 7-under par 137. He made eight birdies and a pair of eagles throughout the day, carding rounds of 68 and 69 to match his previous two low rounds of the season.
He had an eagle in both rounds and trails individual leader Kamron Hopson of Cal State San Bernardino by three shots after the Coyote posted a 7-under par 65 in the afternoon.
Meanwhile,
Dylan Everett is in fourth place ant 139 (-5) and just five shots off the lead. Everett also broke par in both rounds, carding a 71 (-1) in the morning before firing a 4-under par 68 in the afternoon. He made ten birdies and just five bogeys in a pair of steady rounds.
Maverick senior
Timmy Cavarno is also inside the top ten, tied for ninth after a pair of topsy-turvey even par rounds of 72. He eagled the 523-yard, par-5 16
th hole in both rounds but also took a double bogey in the first round and a triple bogey on Hole No. 1 of the 7,003-yard course in the afternoon.
CMU freshman
Jacob Gonzalez was tied for the individual lead after opening the tournament with a 5-under par 67 to match his season-best round. However, he dropped back into a tie for 15
th place after posting a 78 (+6) in the afternoon. Gonzalez had nine birdies throughout the day, making six in the first round and three in the second. However, he also suffered three double bogeys in his second lap of the course.
Meanwhile,
Leo Lavalle and
Luke Wagstaff both figured into the team scoring in one of Monday's rounds.
Wagstaff posted three birdies in an opening round 73 (+1), CMU's fourth best of the morning, before finishing with a 79 (+7) in the second. He is tied for 45
th overall at 152 (+8).
Lavalle fired a 75 (+3) in the morning, a score that was dropped, before coming back to make four of his six birdies of the day in an even par round of 72 later in the day. He moved up 12 spots in the second round and is tied for 25
th entering Tuesday's round.
Baptiste Laborde is also playing for the first time this spring and carded rounds of 80 and 83 while playing as an individual.
