STOCKTON, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team fell two shots shy of a potential NCAA Division II National Championship qualification spot, taking ninth place at the South Central/West Regional, which wrapped up here at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Mavericks finished Saturday's third and final round with a score of 293 (+5) and the 54-hole, 3-day tournament at 870 (+6).
They were just two shots behind Cal State San Bernardino, which held on for the sixth and final national tournament spot at 868 (+4). Hawai'i Hilo and Dallas Baptist were sandwiched in between, tying for seventh at 869 (+5).
Western Washington won the team title by three shots at 856 (-8) with West Texas A&M taking second at 859 (-5). Cal State East Bay finished third at even par 864 while Colorado Christian and Cal State San Marcos tied for fourth at 867 (+3).
San Marcos, which finished Saturday's round at 286 (-2) was the only one of the 20 teams to break par during the final round at the 7,082-yard, par-72 course, which played more than a stroke tougher than on Thursday and Friday.
Dylan Everett led the Mavs in Saturday's round with a 1-under score of 71 while
Leo Lavalle and
Timmy Cavarno both carded 72's. The Mavs also counted a 78 from junior
Luke Wagstaff, who had led the Mavs on the first two days with back-to-back scores of 71.
Freshman
Henry Starr carded a 79.
Lavalle led the Maverick contingent in the final overall standings, tying for 20
th at even par 216.
Everett was in a tie for 28
th at 217 (+1) while Cavarno and Wagstaff tied for 46
th at 220 (+4).
Starr finished in a tie for 87
th at 227 (+11).
Cavarno is the team's lone senior and played in four NCAA regionals in his collegiate career, which came to an end on Saturday.
