PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team posted team scores of 291 and 296 and stands in the middle of the pack as part of a 3-way tie for ninth after the first two rounds of the Sam Proal Invite, which got underway Monday here at the Pueblo County Club.
The Mavericks are tied with Lubbock Christian and host CSU Pueblo's "B" squad at 587 (+19) heading into Tuesday morning's third and final round that is slated to begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
There are 18 teams competing.
Baptiste Laborde, playing as an individual,
Timmy Cavarno and
Jacob Gonzalez are the Mavs top players in the 102-player individual standings,
Cavarno and Gonzalez are tied for 30
th at 146 (+4) after two laps around the 6,428-yard par-71 course layout and led the Mavs' team score in one of the rounds.
Cavarno made five birdies while posting a 1-under par round of 70 in the morning but fired a 76 (+5) in the afternoon round.
Gonzales registered 73's in both rounds and was the Mavs' top team scorer in the afternoon.
Laborde is in 18
th place overall at 143 (+1) and recorded a steady round of even par in the morning, featuring two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. He then had four birdies, five bogeys and nine pars in a round of 72 (+1) in the afternoon.
Meanwhile,
Leo Lavalle is in 40
th place at 147 (+5) after posting scores of 74 and 73.
Dylan Everett is just one shot back in a tie for 44
th at 148 (+6). He registered a score of 74 in both rounds.
Freshman
Henry Starr is in 65
th at 151 (+9) after posting scores of 75 and 76.
Luke Wagstaff and
Inigo Badial are also playing as individuals. Wagstaff is in 50
th at 149 (+7) while Badial is in 56
th at 150 (+8).
Colorado Christian has a slight 1-shot team lead at 561 (-7). The Cougars were at even par in the first round but more than made up a 5-shot deficit in the afternoon.
The host ThunderWolves and West Texas A&M are tied for second at 562 while first round leaders Colorado School of Mines are fourth at 570 (+2).
Colorado Christian's Peyton Jones leads the individual standings at 133 (-9), two shots ahead of CSU Pueblo's Marius Dosiere, who posted an impressive round of 7-undar par 64 in the second round, two shots better than Jones' 65.
