Lavalle leading Mavs after Day 1 of Palm Valley Classic

CMU posts back-to-back six-under par rounds of 282 on Monday

GOODYEAR, Ariz.— Leo Lavalle recorded under rounds of 70 and 66 and is in a tie for second place of the 108-man individual standings while leading the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to a tie for fifth in the team standings through 36 holes of the Palm Valley Classic, which got underway Monday.
 
Lavalle recorded 11 birdies throughout his two trips around the par-72, 7,035-yard Palm Valley Golf Club course and is just three shots off the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 146 (-8).
 
The Mavericks were also able to break par as a team in both rounds, posting identical 282's to stand in a fifth place tie in the 20-team field at 584 (-12).
 
Lavalle and Dylan Everett both posted rounds of 2-under 70 in the morning while Timmy Cavarno and Luke Wagstaff, who was a late addition to the team-scoring lineup, both fired 1-under par round of 71 in the morning.
 
Lavalle's afternoon round of 66, which is the Mavs' best of the spring, paced the Mavs in the afternoon while Cavarno and Wagstaff both matched their 71's.  Meanwhile, the Mavs took a 74 from freshman Henry Starr to complete their afternoon team score.
 
Cavarno and Wagstaff are tied for 35th in the individual standings at 142 (-2) as 50 men finished the day under par.
 
Starr and Everett are tied for 75th at 150 (+4).
 
Chico State leads the team standings at 551 (-25) while CSU Pueblo is tied for second at 554 (-22) after posting back-to-back team scores of 277.
 
The Mavs are just three shots behind Cal State San Bernardino and Cameron, who are tied for third.  They are tied with Fort Lewis entering Tuesday's third round, slated for a 7:30 a.m. local time start (8:30 a.m. Mountain).
 
CSU Pueblo's Marius Dosiere leads the individual standings at 133 after posting an impressive round of 64 (-8) in the morning before following it up with a 69 (-3) later in the day.  Lavalle is one of four men tied for second.
 
The Maverick sophomore made 11 birdies throughout his day, making five during his morning round, including three in a row.  He then had six birdies without a bogey in the afternoon.
 
The Mavs made 39 birdies as a team throughout the day.
