Mavs shave 11 shots, move up two spots after second day in Mexico

AKUMAL, Mexico— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team improved by 13 shots from their first round effort and moved up two places into eighth after the second round of the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya, played Monday here at the Tulum Country Club at PGA Riviera Maya.  
 
The Mavericks had a team score of 302 (+14) in Monday's round after posting a team score of 315 (+29) in Sunday's round and will be within five shots of fifth place in the 15-team tournament heading into Tuesday's third and final round.
 
Luke Wagstaff led the Mavs' Monday effort, recording pair of birdies and 12 pars during a round of 74 (+2) on the 6,980-yard course.  He is now tied for 42nd in the individual standings at 157 (+13) after moving up 20 spots throughout the day.
 
Leo Lavalle finished with a 75 (+3) on Monday and leads the Maverick contingent in the individual standings, sitting in a tie for 12th place at 151 (+7).  He had three birdies in Monday's round.
 
Dylan Everett is also inside the top 20 of the 75-man field, standing in a tie for 18th at 152 (+8).  He recorded a second straight 76 on Monday.  He made three birdies on the front-9 but suffered through a back-9 stretch that as him record six bogeys and a double bogey.
 
Freshman Henry Starr rounded out the Mavs' team score on Monday, signing for a 77 (+5).  He made a team-high four birdies on the day and is now in a tie for 32nd place at 155 (+11).
 
Timmy Cavarno made an eagle-3 on the par-5 eighth hole but finished with a score of 81 on Monday, falling back into a tie for 66th place at 165 (+21) through 36 holes.
 
The course played tough once again with only two players finishing Monday's round below par.  The field averaged 78.24 strokes per round on Monday's after Sunday's 78.83 scoring average round when the course did not concede a single under par round.
 
UT Tyler leads a tight team scoring chase at 598 (+22) by a single shot after recording a second straight 299 (+11) on Monday.  West Texas A&M is second at 599 (+23) while CSU Pueblo and UT Permian Basin are tied for third just one shot further back at 600 (+24) after both squads posted team scores of 296 (+8) to lead the field.
 
The Mavs are within five shots of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Colorado Christian, who sits fifth at 610 (+34).
 
UT Permian Bains's Will Tate posted an under par round of 71 and leads the individual standings by two shots at 143 (-1).  Cal State East Bay's Easton Hether is second at 145 (+1) while Colorado Christian's Peyton Jones and Preston Chabaud are tied for third at 146 (+2).  Jones fired a 70 (-2), the best round of the day on Monday, and surged up 13 spots in the individual standings.

Tuesday's final round is slated to begin with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start.
