Leo Lavalle co-led the Maverick men's golf team alongside junior teammate
Dylan Everett on a tough Tulum Country Club at PGA Riviera Maya course during the first round of the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya on Sunday afternoon.
Lavalle and Everett both posted scores of 4-over par 76 on the 6,980-yard course and are tied for 17
th place after the first of three rounds, but just four shots out of the lead as none of 75 players from 15 teams in the field were able to break par.
West Texas A&M's Luis Palomo and UT Permian Bains's Will Tate are tied for the lead at even par, one shot ahead of a group of four other golfers.
The Mavs are in tenth place as a team with a score of 313 (+25) as the Mavs also counted a round of 78 (+6) from freshman
Henry Starr and an 83 (+11) from
Luke Wagstaff in what was their first international round in program history.
They are 14 shots out of the lead but within nine of a 4-way tie for third.
Palomo's Buff squad and UT Tyler are tied for the lead at 299 (+11) while Cal State East Bay, the Colorado School of Mines, UT Permian Basin and CSU Pueblo are all tied for third at 304 (+16).
Lavalle, a native of Queretaro, made two front-9 birdies and played his first nine holes in even par before taking two bogeys and a double bogey on the back side.
Everett birdied the par-4 third hole and had 14 pars but took a triple bogey-7 on the 10
th hole to disrupt an otherwise clean round.
Starr also made one birdie and is tied for 33
rd place in the field.
Wagstaff also recorded a birdie but had four doubles and two other bogeys in a 6-hole stretch from No. 6-11. He is tied for 63
rd, one shot ahead of
Timmy Cavarno, who is tied for 65
th at 84 (+12).
Monday's second round tee times are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m.
