GUNNISON, Colo.— Despite resting many of their top athletes, the Colorado Mesa University track and field team combined for five event wins, seven other second place finishes and 29 total top-5 efforts in a solid comprehensive efforts at Saturday's Big Red Machine Open here in Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
The Mavs also combined to post eight new marks on the program's all-time top 10 charts throughout the non-team score meet, which included six Rocky Mountain Athletic conference squads.
The Maverick women claimed three events as
Kirstin Williams won the 5,000 meters in an NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 18:24.50, lowered to 17:17.30 with the altitude and track-size conversions before
Kate Linstedt (11:28.48) and
Lauren Hodges went 1-2 in the 3,000 meters.
Mia Munoz and also won the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.41 meters (17 feet, 9 inches) as all as she and Lindsted claimed their first collegiate event wins. Williams has now won the 5,000 in both of her efforts at that distance this season.
Meanwhile, the Maverick men had six of the nine finalists in the 60 meters as
Kade Christensen bested the field with a season-best time of 6.84 seconds to claim his second event win of the campaign. Freshman
Salem Brunk also won the triple jump with a mark of 14.14 meters (46-4.75) as he improved upon his No. 8 spot on the Mavs' all-time top 10 performers chart.
Elsewhere, women's high jumpers
Kaelea Gibson and
Preslee Moser both cleared 1.63 meters (5-4.25) to move into eighth on the Mavs' all-time lists while finishing third and fourth, respectively.
School-record holding throwers
Christina Palmer and
Augustine Hancock both tallied runner-up finishes in the shot put and weight throw after setting their CMU records here in a December meet. Palmer also moved up a spot to fourth in CMU history for the weight throw with a heave of 15.40 meters (50-6.25) to take sixth in that event. Palmer had a shot put effort of 12.12 meters (39-9.25) while Hancock threw the 20-pound weight 16.42 meters (53-10.5).
Redshirt freshman sprinter
Sylvia Johansen also blazed to a time of 7.67 seconds to place third in the 60 meters as she moved into the No. 8 spot of program history.
Addy Kirkpatrick also turned in a third place long jump of 5.36 meters (17-7) for the CMU women.
On the men's side, Christensen led the Mavs' 1-2-3-5-6-7 finish in the 60 meters while freshman
Marik Cummings took second in 6.91 seconds to move into the No. 7 spot of Maverick history, three spots behind Christensen, who has a PR of 6.82 to his credit.
Beau Thornton took third in 6.92 seconds.
The Mavs also fared particularly well in the men's weight throw as
Nathan Jones and
Cameron Kalaf both posted new career-bests inside the Mavericks' all-time top 10. Jones placed second with a throw of 16.78 meters (55-0.75) and ranks fifth while Kalaf placed fifth with a mark of 15.97 meters (52-4.75), which puts him tenth in program history.
Freshman
Dylan Campbell also recorded a second place finish, completing the 800 meters in 1:59.40.
Both men's relay teams also finished in the top three as
Kevin DeGree,
John McGill,
Kyle Towne and
Jayden Thulson finished the distance medley relay in 11:06.73 to take second while
Evan Atkin,
Logan Hafey,
Levi Hoenninger and
Jameson Moore took third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:33.80.
The Mavericks will continue their season next week at the 9
th Annual Gorilla Classic in Pittsburg, Kansas, the site of this year's NCAA Division II National Championships.
