DENVER— Seven different Mavericks won individual events while the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's swimming & diving team also won a relay during a tight 157-143 NCAA inter-divisional dual loss on Saturday against NCAA Division I Denver on Saturday here in the Pioneers' El Pomar Natatorium.
The sixth-ranked Division II Mavericks also had three men surpass the NCAA Pre-Championship Diving Qualification meet standards in the diving competitions before action moved into the swimming slate, which saw the Mavs win five of the first six swimming events.
CMU sophomore
Jax Juarros claimed the 1-meter diving win with a 6-dive score of 347.18 points, good for one of the three NCAA marks. Meanwhile,
Wyatt Hermanson (297.98) and
Ryan Campbell (295.95) both went over the 3-meter qualification standard of 295 points, taking fourth and fifth place behind a trio of Pioneers.
The Mavs then got off to a quick start in the swimming events as
Andrew Scoggin,
Forrest Frazier,
Xander Zappas and
Harry Stacey combined to win the 400-Yard medley relay in a time of 3:18.97.
The Pioneers then took the top four spots in the 1000 Free before the Mavs answered back in the 200 Free through German freshman
Richard Schmiedefeld, who claimed his first collegiate win with a time of 1:41.78.
Scoggin then won the 100 Back in 49.34 seconds while
Kuba Kiszczak took second in 49.93.
The Mavs also had a strong 1-2-4 finish in the 100 Breast as
Max Ayres touched in 56.35 seconds to edge Frazier, who moved into a tie for ninth on the Mavs' all-time charts in that discipline with a time of 56.50 seconds (56.40-altitude adjusted). Maverick sophomore
Mauricio Posadas took fourth in that race with a time of 56.97 seconds.
Two events later, Stacey won the 50 Free for the second straight meet in 20.60 seconds while Schmeidefeld took third in 20.83.
Kiszczak then claimed his individual win, taking the 100 Free in 46.33 seconds while Schmeidefeld claimed another third place finish, touching the wall in 46.67 seconds.
However, the Pioneers were able to win four straight and five of the last six events to pull out the dual.
Scoggin (1:51.80) and
Luka Samsonov (1:52.47) did take second and third in the 200 Back at the start of that stretch before
Lucas Viana (2:06.21) and
Marcos Otero (2:06.86) did the same in the 200 Breast.
The Pioneers then took the 500 Free, 100 Fly and 200 Free Relay, while CMU freshman
Ben Vester did win the 400 IM in between, touching in 4:05.30.
In those events,
Braden Felio also turned a strong time of 4:40.46 to take third in the 500 Free while Stacey took second in the 100 Fly with a time of 49.92. The Mavs' 200 Free Relay team of

The Maverick women also competed on Saturday, falling at Division I Colorado State in Fort Collins.
Both of CMU's teams will resume the season in 2 ½ weeks, when they host the Nov. 20-23 TYR/CMU Invitational in Grand Junction.
