ALAMOSA, Colo.— Zayden Davis and
Dayne Ortega both broke their own school-records and were joined as silver medalists by
Justin Thompson, who claimed his second runner-up finish of the weekend as the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men racked up 52 5/6 more team Saturday team points to finish sixth at the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships here in the Adams State University High Altitude Training Center.
Davis broke his own Maverick standard in the 60-meter hurdles, running to a time of 8.00 seconds while Ortega blasted his 400-meter mark to finish in 49.08 seconds.
Meanwhile, Thompson cleared 2.02 meters (6 feet, 7 ½ inches) as part of a 3-way tie for second in the high jump after finishing second in Friday's long jump event.
In the shot put,
Hayden Riley finished fourth.
Ortega went on to finish sixth in the 200 meters while
Teo Casados took the bronze medal in the 1-lapper after finishing fourth in the 60 meters.
Kade Christensen also finished sixth in the 60 while
Sterling Brassfield took seventh as defending champion
Elijah Williams was unable to run in both the 60 and 200-meter finals after qualifying first and second in Friday's preliminaries.
The Mavs also took seventh in the 4x400-meter relay and received two other team-scoring efforts in the high jump from
Zace Buckhold and
Eddie Kurjak.
In total, the Mavericks recorded four silver medal performances and nine top-4 finishes over two days of action score 68 5/6 points, good for sixth place in the team standings.
The UCCS Mountain Lions won their fourth straight team title with 143 points while the host Grizzlies scored 105. The third through sixth place finishers were spread by less than 15 points as the Mavericks were just a ½ point behind fifth place Colorado School of Mines, ranked fourth nationally, and well ahead of seventh place South Dakota Mines.
Davis got things rolling for the Mavericks as he broke his own hurdling mark of 8.02 seconds to claim the Mavs' first silver medal of the day.
In the 60-meter dash, Casados posted a time of 6.83 seconds while Christensen finished in 6.85 as both earned Second Team All-RMAC honors. Brassfield finished seventh in 6.90.
Later, Ortega cruised to a 400-meter time of 49.08 seconds, well under his former record of 49.37, to claim the Mavs' second track silver of the day.
In the 200, Casados ran to a time of 22.00 seconds while Ortega finished in 22.52.
The Mavs' underclassmen quartet of
Kelsey Montague,
Julio Antondo-Avalos,
Zach Musso and
Casey Amori then finished the relay at the end of the day in 3:24.49, tenth fastest in program history.
In the field, Thompson got over his season-best bar on his first attempt, enabling him to tie Mines' Grant Redmond and CSU Pueblo's Keith McInnis for second.
Zace Buckhold also cleared the same height, a new career-best, on his third attempt as he took sixth.
Teammate
Eddie Kurjak finished in a tie for seventh after clearing 1.97 meters (6-5.5) on his first attempt while
Trey Briggs finished in a tie for 13
th at 1.87 meters (6-1.5).
Riley turned in a season-best and improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying effort of 16.65 meters (54-7.5) in the shot put while the Mavs' lone triple jump competitor
Spencer Purnell was unable to record a legal mark.
The Mavs also had two participants in the heptathlon as freshman
Logan Hafey finished ninth with 4,236 points while
Jay Shuman finished 11
th with 3506.
The Maverick women received two event wins from redshirt freshman Jordan Burnett and two silver medal efforts from Sierra Arceneaux and Kiana Jackson as they finished third in the final team standings.
