ALAMOSA, Colo.— Redshirt freshman
Jordan Burnett won a pair of titles while veterans
Sierra Arceneaux and
Kiana Jackson both took second in their events to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's indoor track and field team to a third place finish at the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships which wrapped up Saturday afternoon here at the Adams State University High Altitude Training Center.
The Mavs, who won four events overall, tallied 97 team points throughout the 2-day meet, their second highest total (110 in 2021) as the Colorado School of Mines claimed its' first team title in program history with 139 ½ points to edge 3-time defending champions UCCS (129).
Burnett, a native of Fairplay, Colorado, broke her own school-record for the second straight day in the 400 meters, dominating the event by more than two seconds in 55.51 before defeating Arceneaux in the 200 with a mark of 24.56 seconds to move into third place in CMU history for that discipline. Arceneaux, who ranks second, was second in 24.73 after taking fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.65 seconds.
Meanwhile, freshman
Avry Kennison took sixth in the 60 at 7.69.
Elsewhere on the track,
Jordan Brockman continued her fine weekend by setting another personal record time of 8.89 seconds to finish fourth in the 60-meter hurdles while
Averie Griffith was sixth in 9.08.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of
Sophie Lindauer,
Emma Dikken,
Elaina Arcand and Griffith finished seventh in 4:02.68.
The Mavs were also well represented in the field as Jackson led the way with a second place mark of 11.75 meters (38 feet, 6 ¾ inches). Freshman
Natalie Smythe and
Katie Thomson also competed as Smythe finished ninth at 10.77 meters (35-4) while Thompson managed a 14
th place finish with a mark of 10.44 meters (34-3).
In the high jump,
Josie Coffey cleared 1.66 meters (5-5.25) to finish fourth in the high jump while
Mica Jenrette cleared 1.56 meters (5-1.25) to finish tenth after winning her third straight pentathlon title on Friday.
Freshman
Kaelea Gibson also cleared the same height to finish 12
th while
Hope Matteson was 15
th after getting over 1.51 meters (4-11.5).
Elsewhere, school-record holder
Virginia Tomon took ninth in the shot put with a mark of 12.38 meters (40-7.5).
The CMU men had four silver medal efforts during the weekend and took sixth place as a team.
