2023 Outdoor (Sophomore): Competed in two meets… Posted a time of 50.11 seconds in the 400 meters at the Mines Mini Meet to qualify for the RMAC Championships, where he finished 15th in 50.26… Named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll… Earned Academic All-District® honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) from a combination of his indoor and outdoor season accomplishments.

2022-23 Indoor (Sophomore): Competed in six meets, during a record-setting and award-winning season… Won the silver medal and First Team All-RMAC honors in the 400 meters at the RMAC Championships… Also placed sixth to earn second team honors in the 200 meters… Set a school-record time of 49.08 in the 400 at the conference meet, breaking his own earlier CMU record mark of 49.37 turned in en-route to victory at the Western Colorado Open… Also won the 400 at the Mountaineer Open & Multi… Had a season-best time of 22.02 in the 200 a the New Mexico Collegiate Classic to rank fourth in CMU history… Also ran the lead-off leg on the Mavs’ school-record setting 4x400-meter relay team at that meet… That team posted a time of 3:17.40… Also ran on the No. 5, 8 and 11 ranking teams in program history throughout the season… Was ranked fourth in the 400 and ninth in the 200 on the RMAC’s season-long performance lists with his converted times of 48.52 and 21.80 seconds, which both came from the RMAC Championships… The 400-meter mark was a NCAA provisional qualifying time… Named to the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll.

2022 Outdoor (Freshman): Ran in each of the team’s first five meets, including the RMAC Championships… Picked up a pair of Second Team All-RMAC honors for his efforts… Finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 48.90 seconds, which puts him fourth in program history… Was also eighth on the RMAC’s season-long performers list with the altitude-converted mark of 49.01… Also helped the Mavs set a school-record 4x400-meter relay time of 3:15.69 to earn the silver medal… Went on to post a season-best 200-meter time of 21.92 seconds at the Maverick Top Gun Last Chance Meet… Had placed 12th at the RMAC Championships in the 200 with a wind-aided time of 22.26… Also ran on the No. 3 (3:16.70) and No. 12 (3:21.31) ranked 4x400-meter relay teams in program history… Ran to a wind-aided time of 11.11 seconds in the 100 meters at the last chance meet, his only effort at that discipline… Had four top-3 finishes throughout the season.

2021-22 Indoor (Freshman): Ran in six meets, including the RMAC Championships during his debut season… Qualified for the finals in both the 200 and 400 meters at the RMAC Championships but did not start in the finals… Qualified third in the 400 (50.27) and seventh in the 200 (22.29)… Finished the year ranked 10th on the RMAC’s season-long performers list in both the 200 and 400… Had run to season-best times of 22.17 and 49.93, both of set in meets at the Albuquerque (N.M.) Convention Center… Helped the Mavs set the former school-record time of 3:19.29 in the 4x400-meter relay at the Don Kirby Open & Elite… Won the 400 at the Mountaineer Open & Multi.

Prep: 2021 graduate of Broomfield High School… Qualified for the 2019 state championships in the 4x200-meter relay alongside brother Trey Ortega… Also qualified for the 400-meter dash as a senior in 2021, placing ninth… Had won the Front Range League title with a PR time of 49.92… Set a PR of 22.50 in the 200 meters as a senior… Coaches were Craig Boccard, Justin Hazzard, Sarah Hughes, Logan Boccard and Dan Valdez.

Personal: Has not declared a major but is interested in the STEM field… Son of Bobby and Colleen Ortega… Brother Trey plays football at the University of Colorado… Enjoys spending time with friends, family and dog Finnegan.
