COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Justin Thompson was named as the men's academic athlete of the year and led three Colorado Mesa University Maverick indoor track and field standouts named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic First Teams, announced by conference officials on Wednesday.
Josie Coffey and
Mica Jenrette were also first team selections on the women's side while 29 other (13 men, 16 women) Mavericks were recognized on the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll.
The first teams were selected by the member's sports information directors based on a combination of athletic and academic accomplishments. To be eligible for nomination and selection, athletes must have a 3.30 or higher GPA, be in their second year at the institution and use a season of eligibility. Ten men and 11 women, due to a tie in voting, were selected to the first team. The top vote receivers were named as the Academic Athletes of the Year. Those not selected to the first team receive honor roll status.
Thompson, who holds a perfect 4.00 GPA while majoring in exercise science, had also been named as the NCAA Division II Elite 90 Winner and as the RMAC's Summit Award Winner for having the highest GPA amongst qualifying athletes for the national and conference championships. He also earned First Team All-RMAC and Second Team USTFCCCA All-America honors with his third and 11
th place finishes in the long jump.
He is now a 3-time all-American and 5-time First Team All-RMAC performer in his Maverick career.
The Carbondale, Colorado native also set the school-record with a leap of 7.57 meters (24 feet, 10 inches) at the Mines Winter Classic and earned his fourth USTFCCCA All-Region honor. He also been named to the RMAC All-Academic First Team for four consecutive indoor and outdoor seasons and was a Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2021 after winning the 2021 RMAC Outdoor Summit Award.
Coffey, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, Colorado, successfully defended her RMAC title in the women's high jump setting a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1.70 meters (5-7) to claim her third win of the season. The political science major also holds a 4.00 GPA and has earned all-region honors in the high jump after all three seasons of her collegiate career. She holds the indoor and outdoor school records of 1.72 (5-7.75) and 1.75 meters (5-8.75) and was named as the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year and as a Second Team All-American last winter.
Jenrette, a redshirt sophomore sociology major with a 3.840 GPA from Los Lunas, New Mexico, has now earned three all-America honors and four RMAC titles in her Maverick career. She finished sixth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Division II Championships with a season-best score of 3,706 points after winning her third consecutive RMAC multi-event crown (2021 Indoor Pentathlon & Outdoor Heptathlon) this winter. She also helped the Mavs place second in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2022 RMAC Indoor Championships after winning a national title in that event in 2021. Jenrette holds five school records, including three indoor events and was also a First Team RMAC All-Academic selection in both 2021 seasons. She is also a 6-time All-RMAC and 5-time USTFCCCA All-Region performer.
