Mavs set seven more NCAA marks, two school-records on Saturday

Torres breaks Niksic's 800-meter mark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Led by a second school record in as many days from Tony Torres, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks ran and jumped to seven more NCAA Division II Championship qualifying marks, a pair of school-records and four other marks that rank second or third on the Mavericks' all-time performance lists on Saturday here at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational.

The efforts came after the Mavericks had set a pair new or improved national qualifying marks and a pair of school-records in Friday's portion of the 2-day meet held on, in and around the fast 200-meter banked track at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Saturday's NCAA qualifiers included Tony Torres in the men's 800 meters, Dawson Heide and Zayden Davis in the men's 60 meter hurdles, Spencer Purnell in the men's triple jump, Sierra Arceneaux in the women's 60 meters, Kira MacGill in the women's mile and the women's 4x400-meter relay contingent of Sophie Lindauer, Arceneaux, Mica Jenrette and Rachel Crutcher.

The Maverick men's 4x400-meter relay team of Dayne Ortega, Kelsey Montague, Austin Reese and Elijah Williams also set a school-record time of 3:19.29, lowering the Maverick standard, set just over two months ago, by three tenths of a second.  Montague had set the Mavs' 400-meter individual school-record last week on the same track.

Torres posted a time of 1:51.30 in the 800 meters on Saturday, smashing the Mavericks' 7-year old program record of 1:52.42, which was held by his coach Shane Niksic.  Torres now ranks 16th nationally and third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with the altitude-adjusted time of 1:50.68.

Meanwhile, the women's relay team posted a time of 3:49.08, second fastest in program history and only behind the school-record time of 3:47.09 that the Mavericks used to win the 2021 NCAA Division II title.  It extended the Mavs' Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lead and moved them to 17th on the national performance list with the altitude-adjusted mark of 3:49.52.

Arceneaux also had a fine individual day, posting a season-best time of 7.59 seconds in the 60-meter qualifying before matching that time and her career-best once again in the semifinal round after many of the top seeded runners were automatically advanced.  With the altitude-adjustment, Arceneaux now ranks second in the RMAC and 22nd nationally with the altitude-adjusted mark of 7.61.

MacGill also improved her second-place standing in the mile racing to a career-best time of 5:04.33.  Lindsay Parsons also had a solid effort of 5:25.41 to move into the No. 6 spot of program history.

Heide also had a fine day as he Davis and Nate Hanson went 1-2-3 in 60-meter hurdling qualifying to all reach the official preliminary round.  Heide the matched his time of 8.14 seconds to reach the final, where he finished eighth and ends the day in the No. 2 position of Maverick history ahead of Hanson.

Davis posted a time of 8.21 seconds in the qualifying section and now ranks fourth in program history while Hanson, who came into the day with a personal-best of 8.19, ran to a time of 8.25.

Heide now stands fourth the RMAC and 26th nationally with his altitude-adjusted time of 8.16 while Davis ranks seventh in the conference and 42nd in Division II at 8.23.

Purnell led the Maverick field event athletes, turning in a performance of 14.60 meters (47-11), the best career indoor performance for the 2021 Second Team USTFCCCA Outdoor All-American.  He now ranks seventh in the RMAC and 30th nationally.  Chian DeLoach also turned in a season-best of 11.63 meters (38-2) in the women's portion of that event.

Elsewhere, Mark Testa (4:18.75), Triston Charles (4:20.30) and Ethan Abbs (4:27.83) all moved up or into the Mavericks' all-time top 10 in the men's mile.  Testa now ranks third in program history behind only Torres, the 2021 national runner-up, and 2016 national qualifier John Cusick. Charles moved up five spots to fifth while Abbs now ranks ninth.

In the women's 800, Amber Valdez posted a time of 2:19.35 to move up four spots to fourth in program history.  Freshman teammate Brooke Miller was clocked in 2:23.20 and now ranks ninth in CMU lore.

Shot put record holder Hayden Riley also had another strong effort of 16.16 meters (53-0.25).

The Mavericks will send a contingent to next Friday's Western Colorado Alumni Open and will then go back to Gunnison, Colorado for the Feb. 25-26 RMAC Championships.
