ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Colorado Mesa University's
Tony Torres and
Elijah Williams both broke their own school-records as part of a fast night for the Colorado Mesa University indoor track & field teams on Friday here the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Competing against mostly NCAA Division I opponents, the Mavericks combined for four race wins and set 11 new times on the program's various top 10 charts during the first day of the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, which continues Saturday.
Torres led an especially strong charge in the 3,000 meters as he placed second in the fast section with a time of eight minutes, 22.17 seconds, obliterating his former Maverick standard of 8:38.01, set at the 2021 RMAC Championships, while also provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships in that discipline.
Meanwhile, teammate
Mark Testa won the next section in 8:38.26 to post the third fastest time in program-history and to move into the No. 2 position on the Mavericks' all-time performers' list.
Triston Charles (8:41.54) and
Ethan Abbs (8:45.66) were not far behind taking third and fourth in the heat and moving into those positions on the Mavs' all-time charts.
The Mavs' also went 1-2 in a heat of the women's 3K as
Kira MacGill won her section in 10:21.52 while
Lindsay Parsons finished second in the heat with a time of 10:32.44, moving into the No. 4 spot of Maverick history, two spots behind MacGill.
Williams led a strong group of sprinters as he won his heat of the seeded 200-meter dash event in 21.35 seconds, a tenth faster than his time of 21.45 at last week's New Mexico Classic, also contested here.
In the unseeded 200 meter heats, freshman
Dayne Ortega ran to a time of 22.17 seconds, moving up four spots to third on the Mavs' all-time charts. Running in the next race,
Kade Christensen also moved up four spots to fifth with his time of 22.22 seconds.
In the women's 200,
Rachel Crutcher finished in 25.17 seconds while freshman
Serenity Burnett-Perry posted a time of 25.28 to win her race, nearly a half-second quicker than her former-best of 25.77, set here last week. She continues to rank sixth in program history with that clocking.
Sophie Lindauer also had a strong effort of 25.62 seconds to move up two spots to seventh in Maverick history.
Victoria Eversley also moved into the No. 9 position on the Mavs' all-time charts with a time of 25.89 seconds.
The Mavericks also had some new season-bests in the field as
Shaya Chenoweth turned in a mark of 5.63 meters (18-5.75) in the long jump while
Josie Coffey cleared a season-best 1.63 meters (5-4.25) in the high jump. Chenoweth ranks fifth in the RMAC with that mark.
In the throws,
Meleeah Holmes-McKown turned in a season-best throw of 15.90 meters (52-2) in the women's weight throw, just a little off her school-record throw of 16.32 meters (53-6.5) at last year's RMAC Championships.
Elsewhere, reigning RMAC Field Athlete of the Week Just Thompson took ninth overall in the long jump with a leap of 7.24 meters (23-9) while freshman
Becker Ell cleared the pole vault bar at 4.53 meters (14-10.25).
