GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University swimming & diving teams both extended their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meet winning streaks in comfortable fashion on Saturday here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
The Maverick women, ranked ninth nationally, have now won 21 straight duals over conference foes, including all five year as they defeated Dixie State, 185-132 and the Colorado School of Mines, 175-148 in their two legs triangular despite exhibitioning all of their swimmers in the final four events.
Meanwhile, CMU's men, ranked 13
th nationally, raised their conference winning streak to eight as they out-pointed No. 23 Mines, 185-149. Seven of those conference wins have come over the Orediggers. CMU's men won 14 of the 20 events in the meet, including nine of 14 in Saturday's portion of the 2-day, 3-session meet, which included a Friday afternoon session.
This weekend's men's dual, which included a brief senior recognition ceremony, was the last of the season for the Mavericks, who finished the dual portion of their schedule with a 3-0 RMAC and 3-5 overall record.
Meanwhile, CMU's women won six events on Saturday and had the fastest time in another after claiming four wins on Friday. They are now 5-5 in overall duals and will close out that portion of the slate next Saturday when they host Western Colorado University before turning their attention to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title defense as CMU will host for the first time since 2017, beginning Feb. 12.
All of CMU's losses on both sides are to Division I foes.
Saturday's biggest highlights came from
Lane Austin and
Torsten Rau. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Rau set the meet's only NCAA "B" cut time of nine minutes, 33.05 seconds to win by more than 25 seconds. The German junior then came back minutes later to take second in the 200 back at 1:55.63 behind Austin, who was clocked in 1:54.09. Austin won six events throughout the meet after taking the 100 back by more than two seconds in 50.55 while leading off CMU's winning 200-yard medley relay in the morning session. The sophomore from Thornton had also won three times, including individually in the 50 free, on Friday.
The Maverick men started the day with a win in the 400 individual medley as
Jake Simmons touched in 4:11.84, to win by 2.58 seconds.
Justin Fell then won the 200 free in 1:43.61 before the Mavs finished the morning by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:34.38. Austin,
Matthew Barrett,
Treven Wertz and
Bailey Usey were CMU's swimmers.
Rau then began the afternoon session with his 1,000-yard free win before Wertz took third in the 100 IM at 55.38 after leading the Mavs with a fourth place time of 52.83 in the 100 fly during the morning.
Barrett (58.93) and Simmons (1:00.32) were second and third, respectively, in the 100 breast while
Logan Ellis finished third in the 1,000 free at 10:03.27.
Fell would then come back to win his second event of the day as he sprinted to a time of 47.15 seconds in the 100 free to out-touch teammates

Noah Vallee (47.48) in a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep.
Barrett then claimed a 200 breast win in 2:07.02 to out-touch Mines' 100 breast winner Migus Wong by just three one-hundredths of a seconds.
Ethan Fox (2:07.49) and Simmons (2:09.17) were third and fourth, respectively.
Tucker Adams then led the Mavs with a second place finish in the 200 fly (1:56.71) before the Mavs were second in the 400 free relay at 3:07.41.
On the women's side,
Grace Payton started the day by winning the 400 IM in 4:38.35 while
Davy Brown finished third at 4:43.55.
Candice Rosen (58.71) and
Bella Walters (58.90) then went 1-2 in the 100 fly before
Maddie Pressler (1:56.61) took second in the 200 free.
Samantha White then finished third in the 100 breast at 1:07.05 to lead three Mavs in the top five before the Mavs took each of the top four places in the 100 back with
Lauren White (58.19) getting the win, just ahead of
Sarah Fillerup (58.30).
The Mavs then finished second in the 200 medley relay at 1:49.64 to close out the morning session.
In the afternoon,
Robyn Naze finished second in the 1,000 free at 10:49.26 before Rosen won her second event of the day, taking the 100 IM with a time of 1:00.94.
Fillerup then claimed a 200 back win with a time of 2:04.59 as the Mavs swept the top three places with Brown (2:06.66) and Payton (2:07.58) rounding out the medal positions.
The Mavs then contested only exhibition swims for the rest of the meet. The highlight of that portion was from
Samantha White, who had the fastest 200 breast time of the meet (2:24.03), more than six seconds quicker than the official winning mark.
The Maverick divers also contested non-team scoring and intra-squad 3-meter competitions in the morning session.
Brittany Dixon won the women's 11-dive event with 449.32 points while Friday 1-meter winner and pool/school record-setter
Jolynn Harris was second with 427.50. Both easily surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard of 420.
Meanwhile,
Ammar Hassan completed the weekend double as he scored 511.35 points to get the upper hand on the rest of his teammates.
Noah Macomber, was a close second with 504.38, while
Isaiah Cheeks (487.20) and
Tanner Belliston (462.16) also went above the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 460.
