MONTROSE, Colo.— Two for two.
The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team, ranked 19
th nationally, won their second straight tournament to open the 2025-26 campaign, posting a 54-hole tournament score of 828 to hold on to a 5-shot win over West Texas A&M University and the rest of the field at the San Juan Intercollegiate presented by Timberline Bank.
The tournament wrapped up on Tuesday here at the Bridges Golf & Country Club as the 12 teams and 62 players completed
their suspended second rounds from Monday before rolling straight in to the third and final round.
The Mavericks' team score was the second best tournament score in program history and was keyed by a 270 (-14) effort in the second round, which is the Mavs' second best single round team score in their history.
The Mavs, who led by three shots overnight, extended their lead to a dozen shots after the second round and then finished the third round at 287 (+3), but held off the Buffs, who finished at 833 (-19), with a third round score of 273 (-11) on the par-71, 7,017-yard track.
Cameron, which also threatened CMU's lead in the final round, finished third at 836 (-16).
All five of the Mavs' players on their main team plus one from their secondary "B" squad finished in the top 20 of the individual standings.
Timmy Cavarno ended up third overall at 204 (-9), capping the second round with a bogey free 65 (-6) before leading the Mavs with a 69 (-2) in the third and final round, a round that featured five birdies.
He was the top Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player in the field by three shots.
Meanwhile, freshman
Jacob Gonzalez, representing the Mavs' "B" team made five birdies in the third round, finishing it with a 67 (-4) to move up to a ninth place finish in his collegiate debut. The Austin, Texas native finished at 208 (-5) overall as he and his "B" squad counterparts ended up tenth in the final standings at 870 (+18).
Fellow freshman
Henry Starr and sophomore
Leo Lavalle were tied for 11
th at 210 (-4) as Starr finished the second round at 68 (-3) before carding a 1-over par 72 in the final round. Lavalle finished off a round of 67 (-4) on Tuesday morning and then carded a 73 (+2) in the final round.
Luke Wagstaff and
Dylan Everett finished in a tie for 16
th overall at 210 (-3).
Wagstaff finished the second round with a 1-under par score of 70 and then rattled off three straight birdies near the end of the final round to help him finish the final round with a score of 73 (+2).
Everett also finished the second round at 70 and had a 74 in the final round.
West Texas A&M's Luis Palomo was the individual medalist at 197 (-16) and finished off the tournament with bogey free round of 65, which also included one eagle. He turned in a card of 68 in the second round.
Lubbock Christian's Hayden Bowman, who had the opening round lead at 62 (-9) finished second overall at 199 (-14).
The Mavericks will continue their season in Mexico, heading to the Tulum Country Club at PGA Riviera Maya in Akumal. That 54-hole tournament will feature three single-round days beginning Sunday on the well-known course, which hosts an annual Korn Ferry Tour event.
