Everett wins title as Mavs claim first tournament victory of the fall

SHERIDAN, Wyo. – Junior Dylan Everett earned his first career win as he led four Mavericks that shot under par this afternoon as the Colorado Mesa University Men's Golf Team claimed a first-place finish at the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational at Powder Horn Golf Club.

Shooting a team score of 273, 15 strokes better than yesterday, the Mavs finished 13 under as a squad while beating CSU Pueblo who they were tied with following round one. The Thunderwolves took second behind the Mavs finishing 10 under.

This is the first time the Mavs have won a fall tournament outright since 2023 when they claimed the Centennial Cup hosted by Regis University.

Everett shot 69-67 on his way to an 8-under, 136 to earn the individual medalist honor by five strokes over three chasers that tied for second in the season opener. The junior nearly played bogey free as he carded three birdies, an eagle and a dreaded double bogey which came on hole No. 13. His 136 for the tournament is his 36-hole best by eight strokes while his 67 in today's final round tied his career best.

For the tournament, Everett carded two eagles, nine birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey.

Everett's teammate Leo Lavalle was one of those chasers behind Everett. Lavalle's round of 65 featured a staggering nine birdies with six of them coming on the back nine to finish in a tie for second place. Prior to today's performance Lavalle's previous best score was 68 set last season.

Timmy Cavarno joins the duo as a top-10 finisher being tied for sixth-place with him shooting two-under in his final round for a 70. Cavarno collected five birdies today with this being his 10th time in his career to finish top-10 in a tournament.

The final Mav to shoot below par was Luke Wagstaff with him carding a one-under 71. Wagstaff finished tied for sixth-place with his teammate Cavarno in the field while recording four birdies with three of them on the front nine.

Henry Starr finished tied for 39th place in his first collegiate tournament shooting a four-over 76 in round two.

Four RMAC teams finished in the top-five of the tournament with Colorado Mesa taking first, CSU Pueblo in second, Colorado Christian in third and Fort Lewis in fifth.

Returning to Grand Junction now for their home tournament this next week, the Mavs will host the San Juan Intercollegiate Tournament presented by Timberline Bank at the Bridges Golf and Country Club on Sept. 22 and 23. Shotgun start is set for 8:30 that Monday.
