TEMPE, Ariz.— Sophomore
Shantelle Tupaz and senior
Nadine Klive turned in honorable mention all-America performances to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to another fourth place finish in the Division II portion of the standings at Saturday's Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships, contested here at Tempe Town North Lake Park.
The Mavericks, who accumulated 546 points as a team, have now finished fourth or better amongst Division II programs in each of the last seven championship seasons since 2018. The Mavs finished ninth out of 11 teams in their debut 2017 season, when standings were not divided by division.
CMU finished 14
th overall out of 36 teams in Saturday's event as Tupaz finished 71
st overall and 17
th amongst Division II athletes with a time of one hour, ten minutes, 38.1 seconds. Klive was just three places and 30.5 seconds behind to finish 20
th amongst Division II athletes and 74
th overall.
The Maverick duo will be named as Collegiate Triathlon Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-Americans after finishing between 15
th-21
st in Division II. The first seven triathletes in each of the three divisions are named first team all-Americans while the eighth-14
th place finishers in each division garner second team honors.
The Mavericks have now had multiple Division II All-Americans in each of the past five years. Klive was amongst that group three times, earning second team honors as a freshman in 2022 and honorable mention plaudits in 2023 and 2025. She, 4-time honoree
Shannon Feran and fellow 3-time selection
Torin Lackmann are the only Mavericks to wrap up their careers with three or more honors.
Tupaz and Klive scored 120 and 117 team points, respectively. Senior
Josie Williams added 107 after placing 84
th overall and 23
rd amongst Division II triathletes in 1:11:41.4. Sophomore
Mackenzie Mayer added 104 points and placed 87
th in 1:12:02.4 while freshman Sylvia Aardema Gagnon rounded out the Mavs' team score with a 93
rd place time of 1:12:33.1, worth 98 points.
Senior
Fiona Graves was the Mavs' sixth finisher, taking 100
th out of 190 finishers in 1:13.51.9
Freshman
Alexandra Schipai, who had led the Mavs in each of the previous three races, finished 106
th overall in 1:14:35.4. She was the only Maverick in Wave "A" after the other six Mavs raced together in Wave "B".
Tupaz was in that solitary position in 2024 and finished sixth amongst the Maverick contingent and 30
th amongst Division II triathletes a year ago, missing out on all-America honors after earning the CTCA's West All-Region Freshman and Division II All-West Region accolades.
Schipai won those same honors this year and met a similar fate after being placed in the fastest and last wave based on her West Regional Championship finish.
Saturday's race consisted of a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer draft legal bike segment and a 5-kilometer run.
As was the case in 2024, the individual times from all three waves were merged together to determine the final individual standings. Overall team scores were then calculated from those standings although the divisional team and individual awards were separated from the overall standings even though the individuals did not necessarily race against each other.
Arizona had the overall individual champion and all five scoring members in the top ten as the Wildcats were able to defend their Division I team title with 927 points. Host Arizona State was second with 920 while TCU took third with 843.
Lenoir-Rhyne claimed the Division II title and a sixth place overall finish with 762 points, dethroning defending champion and North Carolina rival Wingate by just four points. Drury took third amongst the 11 Division II programs in the field with 650 points to finish 11
th overall.
North Central (Ill.) won a fourth straight and eighth Division III crown, while placing 16
th overall with 450 points.
Arizona's Kelly Wetteland won the individual crown in 1:02:09.1 after taking second last year. Her teammate Margareta Vrablova was 10.7 seconds behind on Saturday.
